The Shining...anyone?

I forgot just how scary/awful/ what a great actor Jack Nicholson was in this film, eek.. don't know if I will rest easily tonight...

anyone else watch it???

I saw it was on and made sure I was in bed befoer it started.
I've never watched that film all the way through.

Ive just bought it on dvd. It's one of my favourite films! Infact I prefer it to the book which is unusual.

Travesty of the book in my opinion. Nicholson plays Jack as totally loopy from the start instead of descending slowly into madness. Worth watching to laugh at the hammy acting, though. One of those horror films made by people who don't know how to make horror films.

I have to disagree about Nicholson playing it mad from the beginning, Quirky maybe (but he does play a writer )

Just because it doesn't follow the book to letter doesn't make it an any lesser piece of work

And as for Kubrick not knowing how to make a horror film? The man just knows how to make films full stop.

Brilliant film, had seen it before, but somehow managed to fall asleep just after the 'Heeeere's Johnny!" mad axe moment. Motherhood,eh?

Why does he say 'Heeeere's Johnny' anyway? His name is Jack.

My all time fave film and just been voted number one in the top 100 scariest movies. 'Heeere's Johnny' is taken from the legendary Johnny Carson tonight show.

The anti-Kubrick line is never a popular one but I stand by it.

Just to compound my sins:

A Clockwork Orange, Full Metal Jacket and Eyes Wide Shut are rubbish too.

i find it disturbing when the wife is throwing wobblies - she was apparently close to breakdown during filming, those tears were v real at times, but Kubrick had no qualms...

I love the tracking shots along carpet in the hotel!
Jack Nicholson does ham it up - but that's what's great about him in this film!

Dr Strangelove is a great film. Paths Of Glory is a near-great film. Most other Kubrick leaves me cold.

Off the top of my head, these films strike me as scary: Dead Of Night, Les Diaboliques, Duel, Don't Look Now, Texas Chain Saw Massacre, Ringu, Dark Water (original version - and, yes, I know it borrows from The Shining!)

The Shining is a beautiful film. I'm not a horror fan, and don't think it's Kubrick's best film - still as ks says, I'm a bit spoilt for choice there - not even sure which one I would say is my favourite! Clockwork Orange is fantastic, and I like Full Metal Jacket too. Not so keen on Paths of Glory or 2001. Love Lolita, Barry Lyndon and Dr Strangelove. Dh's and my language would be seriously depleted without Kubrick! dd has gotten into Singing in The Rain recently, but I found it a bit difficult to join in in a cheerful lighthearted way with her...
