Anyone watch this? Does it carry on next week? Hope so otherwise it was a shockingly bad ending Shock

Ended on Friday, you had to stay really glued to the story with the story
going back and forth, when the guy playing Frank spoke at the beginning he
said he was born in 1932 the year after the programme was said to start, and at the end when the photo was found with his mother who was
"Gracie" and the Irish bloke who went to America it gave you the inclination
that he was his father, and that was confirmed when he got the title deeds
to his house in his name to give to his daughter, the title deeds where in the name of Francis and that was the name of the irish bloke, but I agree with you it was a very poor ending but I it out in the end

IThinkNot · 02/04/2011 18:11

So the 15 year old daughter went to the US to have her baby and presumably never came back which is why Frank didn't know her?

I just wanted to see what happened after they found the skeleton!

oops forgot about her,the credits came up when they found the skeleton,
maybe they will do a 2nd series, even though it ended wierd it was still a good
story

It was a weird ending, wasn´t it?

And did I mishear or did Frank say that he´d had a sister who died?

It was obvious he was the son of the Irish guy, but what about Walter & Norah?

FoJo · 03/04/2011 17:46

Just finished watching this, i thought it was really good, I think the ending was ok. Yes Frank did say that Nora had died, presumably just a 'natural causes' sort of thing?

diddl · 04/04/2011 09:14

Yes, I thought that he meant that she died as a child, but maybe not.

So that left him as an only child as Violet went to America.

Maybe he never even knew about her?

I suppose Grace couldn´t really have left her Mum & Walter in that house together.

Wonder what happened to him though.

And would things have been any better in America if she had gone with Francis?

Not sure how well many Irish immigrants got on in the 30s.

So maybe staying with Walter wasn´t so bad-or maybe he left her when she was pregnant?

Do we know who ripped the pic of her & "Sid"?

IThinkNot · 04/04/2011 20:01

hopefully there'll be a second series Grin

midlandsmumof4 · 05/04/2011 01:00

Wasted on a weekday. Fabulous program. Had to watch it on 'Catch Up'. Hope there's another series.

diddl · 05/04/2011 07:28

But it was all "wrapped up", wasn´t it?

Not really leaving anything for a second series.

Unless about Ellie, Poppy, Nick & Frank?

Was it ever said if Frank was brought up by just his mum, or by Walter as well?

Raahh · 05/04/2011 12:09

I thought at one point it was being set up so that Frank would be the pregnant daughters baby- brought up as Gracies child. (This happened to my gran's ex h- he only found out the truth when his 'mother' died, and he learnt the truth about his sister).

I was a bit disappointed when she just diappeared to America.

Also, I did wonder about Nora- the fall, nearly dying, and then she didn't die. Bit odd, especially after old Frank talking about her dying when looking at a photo of her as a child.

Very enjoyable, not too taxing afternoon tv, though- even if they did shoe horn as many cliches/parallels as they could- gambler/drunk, a underage pregnancy/the pill etc.

vintageteacups · 07/04/2011 14:28

I thought it was a bit too many obvious parallels but I guess that was a also a good thing; showing how today isn't so differne tto life back then.

I loved the series and actually didn't click that the body would be Billy lamb; I assumed Violet would die and they would hide her body and that frank would be her baby, brought up by Gracie.

I was sad that gracie and Irish guy didn't get together though.

Easy watching and I'm missing something to fill my afternoon gap.

cocoachannel · 09/04/2011 09:45

I took it that Frank died at the end. As the camera panned back down the stairs, Ellie says 'Dad', in a scared tone. The implication is then that Frank the narrator is his spirit.

In the first episode Frank speaks affectionately about Walter, thinking he's his father, so assume he was a changed man after the body is holed up in the wall.

diddl · 09/04/2011 11:36

I thought he died, although when they panned to the street, I was thinhking there would be an ambulance.

diddl · 09/04/2011 11:37

I missed the first so didn´t get that about Walter.

i was thinking that Violet & Sid might get together in America although not after he´d slept with Grace.

But I thought he seemed to young for Grace.

vintageteacups · 09/04/2011 17:20

Yes, I think Grace sent her off to be with him so he could love her and the baby and she'd at least have a decent bloke to take care of her.
