Silks - poor start, good middle, odd ending?

Anyone else watch it? I thought last nights ep was really odd. Whole series about her being pg then horrible baby loss dealt with in about 2 mins and she wasn't bothered at all.

She wasn't bothered as I assume she's hoping the series will be recommissioned. I thought the whole series was dull and didn't develop much. The storylines at the start were still there at the end. Think it would have been better with a Law & Order style - same characters, some running storylines but different actual story each week.

I also don't know why the clerk told Rupert he'd got silk when he hadn't. Not sure I'd watch a second series.

renaldo · 30/03/2011 10:18

I really enjoyed it last night - thought she was v bothered but good at hiding it

Punkatheart · 30/03/2011 10:33

The whole storyline about losing the baby was poorly done, predictable and forced. It has some good performances but it lacks sparkle. Actually, it lacks really good writers.

DuplicitousBitch · 30/03/2011 10:38

yes, and do you really get awway with murder if you are part of some sort of post modern dickensian child prostitution ring?

thaigreencurry · 30/03/2011 10:48

You may have been able to pick holes in it but I really enjoyed it.

Punkatheart · 30/03/2011 10:52

I think it is the term 'murder' - which means planned. If the death happened in the heat of the moment - then yes, I think the girl would have got a very lesser sentence.

PorkChopSter · 30/03/2011 11:16

It was odd, yes. All that build up about the burglar and then nothing, all the baby stuff & then nothing. Why did the head of chambers appear, having never been mentioned previously?

And regardless of QC or no, would she really have been grinning away like that, hours after miscarrying?

But yes, I expect it's been recommissioned Grin

vjg13 · 30/03/2011 14:02

I haven't seen the last episode yet but lots of bbc/itv dramas follow this type of routine with a weak ending and you end up wishing you hadn't watched any of it.

PanicMode · 30/03/2011 14:07

Just watched it on iplayer (the last episode) and I think the whole series has been watchable in the absence of anything else on at the time, but very disappointing!

I imagine the ending was done like that so that we're on tenterhooks until series 2. However, I'm not sure I'll watch the second one - it wasn't great.

randomimposter · 30/03/2011 15:29

I had really enjoyed it up until last night. Thought the MC was ridiculous and very "TV version"!

Hope there is more.

Yeah the Head of Chambers thing was very strange too...

WipsGlitter · 30/03/2011 16:18

I thought it was crap. She was totally unlikeable as a character and her hair and make-up were terrible (was that deliberate??). I had no idea what was going on by the end. Did she lose her baby? And what was shifty Billy up to with the money?

IloveJudgeJudy · 31/03/2011 20:02

I quite liked it and am interested to see the next series. I think this one was just laying down the characters.

bacon · 31/03/2011 20:49

I liked it, and I'm very critical of the crud on TV.

Ragwort · 31/03/2011 20:52

Very odd - I hadn't watched it before (like bacon I am very, very critical about TV and rarely watch much). Her lipstick was terrible and put me off completely, in fact I nodded half way through, the whole thing was so tedious. Grin.

StableButDeluded · 01/04/2011 00:07

Billy didn't tell Clive (the barrister trying for silk) that he had actually got it-he just said something like 'I've got some news for you' and when the barrister looked at him Billy just grinned and said 'silk'- he never said he got it, but deliberately let him think he had. So he'd go running to Kate, the junior woman barrister who wanted to set up rival chambers to say he could head the chambers as their QC-and then billy could expose her evil plan.

Billy also made a phone call to Judge Crannitch ( Anne Boleyn from the Tudor's father Grinand one of Clive's interviewers for his silk application). I assumed he was telling him about Clive's dalliance with his daughter.

I think it picked up in the last few episodes, but it wasn't as good as it could have been. And yeah, the whole miscarriage thing was poorly done-are we supposed to think Martha's a real trooper because unlike a 'weak' (normal) person she's so dedicated she can not only turn up at court the next day, but provide the vital pieces of evidence to clinch the case. And that she'd be quite so smiley and happy?

And I can't stand the male pupil-see, I can't even remember their names! He kept stealing things Hmm

MollieO · 01/04/2011 10:20

The male pupil's back story wasn't expanded at all. The but where he stole a wig and gown was farcical. There is no way he wouldn't have been caught. To be a pupil in a good set of chambers he must be academically very bright indeed especially without any contacts. He seemed rather thick to me.

I also didn't understand why Billy wanted to shaft Clive when Clive was his mole.

MollieO · 01/04/2011 10:20

Bit not but.

OrangeBernard · 01/04/2011 10:27

There's no way she would be back in court the day after losing a baby a 13+ weeks.

TracyK · 04/04/2011 15:32

I liked it - but then I would like AYTHING Rupert PJ was in!!

Bumperlicioso · 05/04/2011 21:35

I liked it but didn't understand a lot of it. Think it assumed a lot of knowledge. I'm also still unsure as to whether we were supposed to like Billy or not. I'd watch it again as I am a bit of a sucker for all that legal pomp and stuff.

Clary · 05/04/2011 22:42

OK ladies bit of a disaster - I planned to record this but forgot, planned to watch it on iplayer but Wii crashed on me on Sunday night (about half way thru), went to watch the rest tonight - too late!

So I'm guessing she loses the baby but gets Silk? Is that right? And does the woman out of Dr Who end up with egg on her face over trying to shaft Billy?

And is Niamh the same actress that plays Lady Mary (ie Henry's daughetr by C of A) in The Tudors??

TracyK · 06/04/2011 07:54

Yes, Yes, and don't know

anonacfr · 06/04/2011 08:20

Yes and yes. Billy exposes Dr Who lady at the vote for which pupil to keep (we don't get the result btw) as well as announcing that Clive didn't get silk.
He tries to sack Dr Who lady (not sure how he has so much authority as he's supposed to be employed by the barristers not the other way round) but Martha the new QC intervenes and tells them they're like a family- they have to stick together through fights.

Niamh played Anne Boleyn I thought? But I only watched one episode of the Tudors so not sure.

I actually really enjoyed the series Blush. I really enjoyed the character of Martha- I thought she had a good mixture of empathy and toughness suitable for her job.

And RPJ is always great for obvious reasons.

The MC was rather silly though. If they're recommissioning it would have been a lot more interesting to see her deal with a pregnancy and baby than 'conveniently' lose it.
Bad plot contrivance.

stylenotfashion · 06/04/2011 18:06

I liked it but I'm very easily pleased :)
