FIL cooked Heston's chilli the other night, complete with marmite, red wine and ketchup. It was interesting.

I think he just has to be weird, it's an illness. Tonight folks we're grating hedgehog into samphire and these saps are going to eat it, suckers.

The vacuum packing and sous-viding idea is great, as it would save space. Normally when a boat goes on patrol they have triple decks, as the decks are used to store layers of cans on, and the level drops over the course of the patrol as the tins are consumed. The freezers are chocka as well...so if this saves space it's great. However, I cannot believe that not one supply officer/chef in the RN has not thought of this before.

My dh used to come home from sea and literally cuddle a lettuce as after about 2-3 weeks all the fresh stuff has gone. After a while away, the first meal home had to be veg and salad based with fresh fruit and lots of it after.

I agree I'm shocked they had fresh and then just a load of chips and beans when the fresh is used up, even a shift trip to iceland would bag you, all kinds of frozen fruit and veg, but I'm guessing the under a pound per bowl thing has a big part to play in it.

It's not just chips and beans when the fresh stuff is used up; it's all sorts of frozen/canned/dried fruit and veg, but the problem is storage and the inability to restock. Many submarines go to sea for upwards of two months at a time, and once dived, do not surface, so you have to take it all with you.

The chefs do not have much money to work with, and I think they do bloody well for the amount they have.
