oh dear! we waited so long that we gave up and brought the whole series about two weeks ago only to find out it started tonight - never mind, good series although not as good as the others in my opinion!

melsy · 15/10/2005 14:25

vvv enjoyable last night , although had to be given a reminder histroy lesson on Israel. I got a bit upset at the Leo in the woods bit.

Blandmum · 15/10/2005 15:14

Ohh I've watched 9 episodes on DVD, it is excellent. Much better than series 5 IMHO.

Later on you get to see Jimmy Smits andAlan Alda. Even though AA is quite old, I still rather fancy him, as well as Jimmy

tribpot · 15/10/2005 15:49

I gave up on watching this series (downloading it when it was aired in the States) because I just found the direction they were taking the characters in completely unbelievable. And I am a HUGE West Wing fan. But won't say more until the eps have been aired on More Four as it's not fair to others!

Blandmum · 15/10/2005 15:51

Aww that is a shame. Did you find it got worse after 9 episodes? Or do I just have little taste???

Thought some of the politics were a bit 'with one leap, Jack was free'.

tribpot · 15/10/2005 16:07

I think I managed about 13 eps in total before giving up, so I'm sure if you enjoyed the first nine you'll enjoy the rest I think part of the problem is, I am a complete West Wing purist, it's my favourite TV show of all time. So I object to anything that plays about with previous story lines or just seems too unbelievable.

That said I might buy the DVD and give it another go as I was pregnant when I watched the series before and thus both easily irritated and hyper-critical.

Actually what I really objected to was some of the older characters being side-lined in favour of younger and more attractive ones, presumably to appeal to the dwindling audience in the States. So Kate rather than Fitz or Nancy from national security, that appalling midget woman (won't say what she was doing as it gives too much away, but let's say standing in for another character when he/she got a promotion - a completely unbelievable promotion at that). I mean, what next? Zoey Bartlet for Pres?!

Blandmum · 15/10/2005 16:17

I never forgave them for trying to pair up Josh with the women;s rights compainer....what was she doing with her houth, she always looked as if she had lock jaw!

First and second series were the best IMHO, down hill since that, but even 5 and 6 are better than most of the stuff on UK TV ATM!

melsy · 15/10/2005 16:20

I have to stop the urge to push for spoilers , But DONT GIVE me them !!!

You are right martian bishop , its better than all the millions of reality, Im going to the loo, everything shows!!

Its shame when porgrammes loose some integrity just for ratings.

tribpot · 15/10/2005 17:10

campaigner or complainer? Or both I didn't like the way they made her the First Lady's Chief of Staff, when she had an excellent one in Series 1 who sparred with Sam.

Very true that it's still miles better than most of what's on TV at the mo.

Now shall we tell melsy about the episode where it turns out Leo is the real father of Toby's twins?! (Just kidding, although the programme is heading more and more towards such sensationalist storylines, it wouldn't surprise me).

Blandmum · 15/10/2005 17:15

I still miss Sam, it was never the same after he went. There was no-one left for Toby to spar with on an equal footing. Josh became all 'odd' in series 5, hawkish and driven one minute, wishy washy the next.

They never seemed to satisfactoraly deal with the fact that they didn't change America for the better in spite of two terms of office. I felt the shooting of the Qumari terrorist seemed out of character for Bartlet in 5 as well.

tribpot · 16/10/2005 08:05

Yes, Josh's character was all over the place in 5, I suspect because Aaron Sorkin had left and the new writers were happier to mess about with the characterisation in order to fit the storylines.

Ellbell · 18/10/2005 12:59

Oooh, just discovered this thread. I am a MASSIVE WW fan. Also bought series 6 on DVD, only to find out it's on on More4. Oh well. Have only seen about 5 episodes so far, but it seems a lot better than series 5, which was all over the place IMO.

But has anyone else noticed the missing year? Towards the end of series 5 they were talking about the approaching mid-terms, and suddenly at the beginning of series 6 Bartlett has only got a year to go of his presidency and it's all to do with who'll replace him. Maybe people weren't meant to notice this, but I watched series 5 on DVD, and moved immediately on to series 6, so it was really bleedin' obvious!

Completely agree about the annoying squealing midget woman. And find it totally unbelievable that Toby would put up with someone so annoying with barely a murmur. He had difficulty even coping with Sam, FFS! And this woman is off the scale when it comes to being annoying.

tribpot · 18/10/2005 21:42

Yes - the missing year is there. Or not there, if you see what I mean. I think the programme makers wanted to hurry it towards a more interesting scenario, i.e.the leadership elections.

As to midget woman, how did Toby ever tolerate crazy Marina woman from S5, after the sublime Ginger and Bonnie? (Not to mention, why kill those characters off?)

My crush is worse than Toby - it's Leo. He may be old but I think he's great anyway (btw, my ds is called Toby, but not after Toby in TWW )

flowerfairy · 18/10/2005 22:46

oh I just discovered this thread after watcing ep2 of this series on DVD. Can't cope with all the adverts!
he thing is I'm itching to watch ep3 to find out whether Leo is okay, but have to go to work in the morning and ds is waking with a pooey nappy at 1am so can't cope watching the next one.

romany4 · 18/10/2005 22:47

I only started watching it last series but i LOVE it now.
Toby and Leo? PLEASE NO!
Definitely Martin Sheen. He`s lovely and so much nicer looking than either of his sons!

Milge · 18/10/2005 23:00

Just seen all of series 6 on dvd and i think its much better than 5. Still v at Fitz being killed off at the end of S5. I found the electioneering/convention episodes the most fascinating. I too confess to a thing for leo- Martin Sheen is just too short, and what is going on with his jacket flinging when he leaves the room?

Ellbell · 18/10/2005 23:55

Leo's too old, I'm afraid, though quite appealing, in a labrador-esque kind of way. But I just like difficult men, hence the attraction of Toby. Was that woman called Marina? I thought she was called Rita...! Oh well.

Ellbell · 18/10/2005 23:55

I lurrrved Fitz too Milge.

Blandmum · 19/10/2005 07:38

I know what happens in the end......I cheated and skipped ahead while I was ironing one afternoon.......

Bad woman!!!!!!!

lilibet · 19/10/2005 08:02

Did anyone else think that it was completely unbeleivable that Leo wouldn't be missed until the next morning?

He's the Cheif of Staff FGS? He couls have been kidnapped? What about the people who make the beds/clean the rooms/supply the food, someone must have noticed that he wasn't there?

OP posts:
tribpot · 19/10/2005 10:46

Absolutely lilibet, I only didn't say until the episode had been aired so as not to spoil it for you It is utterly ridiculous that in CAMP DAVID, the White House Chief of Staff could go missing all night, why didn't his security detail notice he'd gone? Fat lot of good they'd be if he had been kidnapped.

Glad I'm not the only one with a Leo fixation. As to his jacket, I have a feeling I read somewhere that Martin Sheen (yes more attractive than his kids) has a problem with one of his arms and this is a rather flamboyant way of disguising it ..

I'm sure she was called Marina, doesn't someone ask her if she's Greek and she said something like no I was born on a ship or summat? I did like her exchange with Donna:

DONNA: So. We need to talk hair and makeup.
MARINA: Sure, if you want to know how to put makeup on, just let me know and I'll show you.

Ha ha.

lilibet · 19/10/2005 12:21

oh yes, Leo out of all of them any day!!
Even nicer then Sam!
