You don't need a visa to get into Israel. And I presume that the friend paid for her ticket as her friend wanted her to come with her. The friend's family don't look short of a bob or two!

Don't envy her getting out of Israel though - she is going to spend HOURS at Ben Gurion answering security questions Grin

Really enjoyed last nights episode and was thinking it was a bit biased in one direction but now its more balanced.
I think i missed a lot of the first episode as i was watching on 4 on demand and the picture went. Expected it to last an hour so did not think i had missed much but it was on for 1 and a half hours ! It looks a very beautiful country.

PP the thread is www.mumsnet.com/Talk/_chat/1143912-Can-someone-explain-Israel-to-me-in-simple-terms I started it and by coincidence this drama came out. Ive only seen the first one and Im enjoying it. Iwonder how many of the actors are real Israelis I noticed some of the accents are all over the place.

begonyabampot · 15/02/2011 00:41

Just saw Ep 2 - brilliant! Saw this reviewed on The Review show a few weeks ago and they were quite scathing. But I'm really enjoying it - spent some time in Israel 20 years ago and still have friends there so really enjoying this. The post WW2 story is the best. Really looking forward to the next 2 episodes.

BitOfFun · 15/02/2011 00:43

I don't know how anybody could be scathing about it- it is superb drama, in my view, and really informative.

begonyabampot · 15/02/2011 00:50

If you watch The Review Show then something has to be particularly amazing to get the thumbs up. This is great, informative drama (ok, a bit sledgehammerish with the expos but thats forgivable). Makes me want to book a flight and go there right now - such an amazing place (with all it's problems).

Deliaskis · 15/02/2011 09:55

I too am enjoying this, and wish that TV was wall to wall with this kind of drama. Something that makes you think as well as being absorbing as drama in its own right.

I'm especially impressed with how it is showing both sides. It would be all too easy to just do a one-sided expo.

The only thing I'm not convinced by is that I think Erin is a little too naive. She has a jewish friend whose family live in Israel, and like me, has presumably been watching various Israel/Palestine related incidents/issues on the news her whole life, yet didn't seem to be aware that there might be areas where Arabs/Jews just wouldn't go. I thought that was pushing the naive gap year student thing a bit too far.

Hats off to channel 4 for this one.

Just seen the first episode and thought it was amazing. Whilst I have seen some of the concentration camp footage before, I hadn't seen some of the more graphic bits, and I had a physical reaction to them.

Entertaining and thought provoking. Great stuff.

begonyabampot · 15/02/2011 10:41

i thought the 2nd episode was even better - enjoy. It's the only thing I'd make an effort to watch at the moment.

southeastastra · 17/02/2011 08:55

just seen episode two - agree this is fantastic - harrowing though.

how many parts does it have?

begonyabampot · 17/02/2011 13:31

4 parter so enjoy the next 2. To think The Review Show panned but what do they know. It's not perfect but about the best thing on at the moment.

kittya · 17/02/2011 15:45

I love the grandads story than I do the up to date one. I just find Erin irritating but, maybe she's just being a teenager. I'd love to know what her mate was doing living in Leeds when her parents seem to live in Israel.

I agree, it's probably the best thing on telly at the moment. Makes me want to visit there.

begonyabampot · 17/02/2011 18:12

agree kittya the older story is more interesting - , I could even develop a crush on pops - he isn't half bad at all!

kittya · 17/02/2011 19:29

he's gorgeous!! has he been in anything before?

begonyabampot · 17/02/2011 19:50

had to admit I looked him up on IMDb - the movie site.

begonyabampot · 17/02/2011 19:52

was playing tennis with them - one is a ranked player - oh they were beautiful!

begonyabampot · 17/02/2011 21:48

oh dear - wrong thread! Wondered where that reply went.

GettinTrimmer · 18/02/2011 11:28

I've watched every episode so far, I'm going to read the the thread above as I have big gaps in my understanding Sad erin went to see the Grandad who took part in violence against the British, he said they didn't hate them but the British were standing in their way of them inhabiting their homeland.

Just a force behind them after the persecution they could deal with nothing else than pushing everyone who they felt opposed them out of the way.

kittya · 24/02/2011 19:16

Im still enjoying it but, Erin gets on my nerves Im afraid Sad I much prefer the old story.
