i thought it was a pile of sexist crap, tbh.

southeastastra · 28/01/2011 13:17

it was very uncomfortable viewing - but i find japan such an odd country anyway

i thought HE was odd. gettig all po-faced about paedo dolls having not two minutes before finger-fucked a silicon vagina...

exexpat · 28/01/2011 13:40

I didn't see it, but saw the listing in the TV guide, and from that summary it sounded like all the other 'isn't Japan weird' TV programmes there have been over the years - most of which would be completely unrecognisable to anyone Japanese.

It's like doing a programme on the UK and only visiting Hooters on a stag night, a Dr Who fan event, a gypsy wedding and a night at the greyhound races, and saying this is what life in England is like...

I lived in Tokyo for 11 years, and never went to a host bar, never saw a used-knicker vending machine, etc etc. Yes, I'm sure all those things do exist, but they are hardly mainstream.

I suppose that kind of programme is OK purely for entertainment purposes, but since most people in the UK will never visit Japan, it's a shame they get a seriously warped idea of the place.

So next time I walk past Justin Lee Collins sitting outside a cafe in Clifton maybe I should ask him what he really thought of Japan?

southeastastra · 28/01/2011 13:48

i was surprised certain parts were broadcast, i don't judge japan just from these shows but it's very hard for them not to have some influence in how it's portrayed

to be fair to him, i think he was subdued. he is a high energy guy, but not a complete boor, so bouncing around all these terribly polite and nice japanese people (however peculiar their proclivities) especially via a translator, was always going to be hard. not the right country for him and the result was a very strange film imo.

dobiegirl · 28/01/2011 19:06

I thought he looked really uncomfortable at times, especially when the Japanese man was feeling his boobs and saying how nice they were!!!

Also agree about him going mega-serious over the paedo dolls!!! Was a bit wierd - they are just dolls!!!

Aitch · 28/01/2011 20:52

well the thing is that they are either just dolls or they aren't. if they are, fine, don't get weirded out, but if they aren't then don't disrespect adult women either, iykwim?

southeastastra · 28/01/2011 20:55

the child dolls were very disturbing no question

but there seems to be this weird wanting sex yet being frightfully shy mindset in japan hence the (adult) dolls with eyes shut

(am conscious that this is just a small minority of the population exexpat!)
