Octonauts: a discussion

I have a few questions about Octonauts:

What is Captain Barnacles accent? Is it southern? Northern? It doesn't seem to be consistent.

Proffesor Inky-whatsit, is he meant to be an octopus that looks like a cat?

Why are the girls relegated to mere sidekicks & not even mentioned in the opening titles? Is because their girls or because they're both forrin?

Are the animals featured real animals (I mean the ones they rescue, not the Octonauts)?

It is definitely cool that Tweak invented all the Gubs and a male Vegemal bakes the biscuits.

Just a bit annoying that none of the women get to go on adventures.

Dashi gets eaten by a whale shark! So she is allowed out occasionally.

Can anyone hazard a guess as to what Dr Shellington's doctorate is in?

Bearing in mind how long it takes him to come up with even the most basic googleable information about sea creatures I'm guessing it's not in Marine Biology.

And don't get me started on the H&S aspects of his trip to find Remipedes. Cave diving is one of the most dangerous types of diving. No buddy, no safety line --he doesn't even call in to let them know he's crashed?? And Barnacles let him go out KNOWING he couldn't safely drive the GUP so I think there are serious management or policy failures.

His rescue team use a safety reel with the reel at the outside of the cave that would automatically rewind? They should have been tying off regularly and holding the reel. And one torch each? Should have been a minimum of 2. I carry a torch even in tropical waters on a sunny day.

I might need new hobbies huh?

So guesses on the doctorate?

I go for Literature.

Pretty much anytime any of them go out, they get into trouble and need rescuing. It's not a feminist issue, it's a dangerously lax attitude towards health and safety issue

It's a shame about Dashi and her adventure, but bearing in mind the failures of the leadership is it any wonder?

I think Tunip may be the only sensible one (even though I suspect he has low blood pressure what with all the fainting).

I'm a bit disturbed by the vegimals who appear to be a slave race genetically engineered by professor inkling to do all the cooking and cleaning. Though they do a great octoalert...

Maybe it's one of those foreign correspondence courses? (no offense to reputable distance learning. I'm an OU student).

New Octonauts?

Yay on behalf of my children and also for all of the 10 minutes of tea-breaks/showers/housework/dinner prep I can have.

But can I trust that there will be no more blatant examples of poor working practices, people working above their skill levels, disregard of acceptable diving practices - I assume the Octonaut crew are BBC affiliated and should therefore have UK standard rules applying - Or should I write to the H&S commission saying that while there are acceptable risks and they shouldn't micro-manage there are serious errors being made frequently and the consequences could be severe?
