MONDAY 03 OCTOBER

Drama

Class of '76

9:00pm - 10:30pm

ITV1 London

VIDEO Plus+: 4574
Subtitled

Episode written by John Ireland

1/2

It's hard to resist the dark, downbeat allure of this hugely enjoyable two-part murder mystery. Though Class of '76 has more than its fair share of moodily pretentious scenes, the overall effect is cosily chilling. Robert Carlyle, making a welcome return to TV, is Tom Monroe, a dour, maverick loner detective who becomes intrigued, then obsessed by a curious case that begins with an apparent suicide. The dead man has left behind an enigmatic, obscure taped message that hints at some kind of collective guilt.

Soon Monroe and his sloppy sidekick reach back into the past to 1976, to a class of 32 primary school pupils and to the still-unsolved murder of a young girl. Soon, the former classmates start dying in mysterious circumstances. All the elements of a good thriller are here, including a whiff of the supernatural, and the fact that most of the drama takes place in a flat, grey, out-of-season seaside town only heightens the tension. Concludes tomorrow night.

I LOVE Robert Carlyle!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

TurQorTreat · 03/10/2005 21:13

Robert Carlyle is fab, but I am getting really sick of ITV doing childmurder as entertainment, I hated that thing "Afterlife" the other night too. If it's not children being abused it's women being raped - can't they make 'drama' out of anything else?

helsi · 04/10/2005 19:33

I thought it was great and looking forward to part 2 tonight.

who is the mysterious 33rd child?

who indeed????????????????

convinced it's not a ghost.... but who could it be?

moosh · 05/10/2005 14:51

Really enjoyed it but got a little tired towards the end and got confused. Right,
Did she have a twin who died at 5yrs?
Was that his ghost in the picture then?
He looked alot smaller than the other kids? (and blurred)!!!!
What had the original murderer of the first girl (the guy in the wheelchair) have to do with the split personality doctor? Were they half brother and sister? They had the same surname didn't they? (CONFUSED??????)

Please shed light I know it is over but really annoying that I got too tired to listen properly to the last 30mins.

Jenum71 · 05/10/2005 16:52

I would like some explanations too please?

Was slightly confused and still could not tell you who the murderer(s?) was!

Was worth watching anyway for the lovely Robert Carlyle!
