Maybe this should be renamed The Peter Boyd Show, such is the increasingly irrational detective superintendent's dominance of the series. Boyd (Trevor Eve) is now so patently unstable you have to wonder why he isn't on sick leave, and it would be nice to give him a rest to allow the other members of the cold-case squad a chance to shine. In this second episode of a two-part story, Boyd is called to a prison where he confronts a dying ex-cop (David Hayman) who maintains he's innocent of a murder Boyd put him away for years ago. Boyd gets a prick of conscience and decides to re-open the case (which isn't actually cold, so what's it got to do with him?). While the other team members try to get a look in as their boss becomes more unhinged, the late Mel's comely replacement arrives to a frosty reception.
