1/6 - More Than Meets the Eye

There are some good old-fashioned shivers in this highly promising mystery series about a woman who sees dead people. Lesley Sharp is unhappy medium Alison Mundy, who's trying to settle down in her new home in Bristol and leave behind her previous life. But it's not so simple: Alison's tormented by the voices of the dead and the demands of their living relatives. At a public séance, Alison is uncannily accurate and compelling as she sends messages from the other side to audience members, but professional sceptic Dr Robert Bridge (Andrew Lincoln) is having none of it, and is particularly disturbed when Alison focuses on one of his students, who takes her pronouncements to heart. Afterlife is a taut and snappy spine-tingler, even if it does use some old-hat shocker techniques such as creaking floorboards, darkness, inexplicable noises and unexpected taps on the shoulder. Well worth a look.

3/6 - Daniel One and Two

What this spooky drama series lacks in content, it more than makes up for with its taut style. Tonight's episode, for instance, focuses on Daniel, a teenage lad who believes "Daniel 2" keeps physically attacking him and doing bad things, such as stab his girlfriend. The doctors reckon Daniel is schizophrenic, while clairvoyant Alison Munday (Lesley Sharp) believes he is really being tormented by the spirit of some long dead person. That she's right is no surprise. It is called Afterlife not Psychiatric Life, after all. But that doesn't matter. It's the way the story is told that's so spine-tinglingly tense.
