HBO Drama is it the best?

All the good stuff I've seen recently is from the USA - Big Love, Weeds, Treme, Glee, Carnvial. I'm starting to find films too long and find myself drifting away possibly because most of them score low on the Bechdal? Test unlike the serial dramas which are a consistant 3 .

Anyone else there?

HBO have always made great TV programmes. Six Feet Under, Deadwood, Band of Brothers, The Sopranos, Oz, True Blood, The Wire. I'm currently liking Hung and Bored to Death, and I've heard good things about Boardwalk Empire.

Boardwalk Empire is good, gently building the characters up, I think it's all going to kick off soon.

Deadwood might might be my all time favourite although had to be careful with my language after.

Thanks will try Hung and Bored to Death.

I love Steve Buscemi, I think I'd watch him in anything. DH and I have lots of TV episodes downloaded, but are falling way behind with watching them. Not enough time to watch TV with 7mo DD to chase after.

BlackBag · 08/11/2010 23:17

He obviously steals the show in Boardwalk - as if he needed any more character is now quite wrinkly & beaten about.

I have erased the birth to six months stage of my DDs not sure why now but there was n't much time for anything. Grin

I think at that stage we watch Battlestar - in space no one can hear them cry.

Grin DH watched Battlestar Galactica, I kind of dipped in and out of it. Have you been watching the new spinoff, Caprica?

Akiko · 11/11/2010 11:34

Where are you watching these shows? I heard some are coming to Sky Athlantic next year.

anonacfr · 11/11/2010 14:13

Caprica's been cancelled after half a season apparently. Never got round to watching BG- great reviews though.
I'm really into AMC shows at the moment, even though I've never watched Mad Men. Rubicon and The Walking Dead are both superb so far.

WookieetheChew · 11/11/2010 22:10

Mad Men is great. It sometimes seems to move at an almost glacial pace, but the characters are so rich, and the late 50s/early 60s settings are so lush, it draws you in.
I watched the first two episodes of Rubicon and found it interesting; it's on the list of shows I need to catch up on!

Akiko there are ways and means of obtaining TV episodes that have aired in the US. It's not entirely legal though.

(P.S. I've namechanged, was BMI)

anonacfr · 12/11/2010 12:44

Rubicon is also slow but I guess you're used to it with Mad Men! I'm up to ep 7 (it's a 13 episode season) and it gets better and better.
Interestingly The Walking Dead which is also an AMC series, like MM and Rubicon is also quite slow.
Must be a channel policy! I appreciated these types of show more and more- I like lingering on characters and taking my time. The Event is really silly compared to Rubicon. Grin

The Wire, Deadwood, True Blood - all fantastic. And all an hour long, instead of a piddling 40 minutes like 24 and Heroes. Slight thread hijack but does anyone want to join me in complaining to Channel 4 about the number of ad breaks - True Blood yesterday - 3 ad breaks in 30 minutes. Aaaaarrrrggghhhh! I had a red wine moment and sent them a ranting email Blush which they did reply to - sent them a rather more measured and articulate one today - still, more weight to the argument would be good Grin. End of hijack.
