Masterchef Austrailia - new series ?

LIZS · 04/09/2010 18:50

I assume it is the new series starting on Monday 6th (7pm Watch). Interestingly the French have adopted the same format so wonder if UK version will follow suit.

I don't like the Australian version. That aside, the version the UK is getting now finished with us about a month ago.

jodevizes · 04/09/2010 19:07

The Aussie version seems a lot harsher than the UK one which is fun as they get a lot more nastier.

Nettee · 06/09/2010 13:18

oooohhhhh yay! thanks for this - hadn't spotted it, have set up the series link

LIZS · 07/09/2010 08:35

We seem to have missed the initial round and started at the final 50. Confused

I got confused that they seemed to want to be picked to take part in the cook-off (of the Pavolva). Surely this was a bad thing. Did I miss something?

conkie · 08/09/2010 10:44

The cook-off of the pavlova was because thay had done the worst dishes of the previous round so it was like a second chance sort of thing. I love this show and it is a lot better than the UK version in my opinion, although I still like it. There is an american version with Gordon Ramsay that will be shown in the UK as well sometime. Can't wait fo that as they are following the Australian premise of the show.

dc are so happy we're back in the main set (with the M hedge) and have the full theme music Grin Highly amused that they credit the footwear when you so rarely see Gary's feet! Have they ditched the female presenter or was she only around in the later stages last year ?

OP posts:
Nettee · 15/09/2010 11:09

I think they must have ditched her - I am sure she was there from the beginning last time. Think the elimination immunity is a good thing too as the people that won the celebrity challenges didn't do very well when they came back maybe because they hadn't been practising that sort of cooking in the time they were away. Also loving the theme tune!

conkie · 15/09/2010 12:31

Does anyone else think that the contestant Philip is absolutley gorgeous? I salivate when looking at him. I think it's because he reminds me of Jack from Lost

LtEveDallas · 15/09/2010 12:49

Already addicted and already loving Alvin, and the builder and the plasterer!

I think they all seem better cooks already this time round, although I did think the selection process was a bit harder this time round - maybe thats why?

Mutteroo · 21/09/2010 22:59

Saw French Masterchef on holiday and what was strange was how they had the bald chef, the brown haired chef and the flamboyant food critic!

Great format which I hope at least in part we nab over here. Love Alvin also; brilliant personality and not a bad cook.

lilyliz · 22/09/2010 16:31

I prefer theAussie one to ours, can't stand the voice of the woman who does the voice over on the British series.

LIZS · 08/12/2010 14:02

Anyone still watching ? It's Finals Week . Claire to win despite her close call last night !

OP posts:
icapturethecastle · 08/12/2010 14:07

I think Adam will win. Having to be very strict about not googling winner. What am I going to watch when it finishes.

pooka · 08/12/2010 14:10

I love the show, but I don't think it is as rigorous in terms of cooking flair, inspiration and skill - too many tasks involving following a recipe and replicating dishes made by celebrity chefs.

Still great to watch - is like the apprentice and masterchef rolled into one.

PanicMode · 08/12/2010 14:40

I am so annoyed, I googled to find out when they were airing the final here and found out the winner; completely my fault but.....grrrr!

I really enjoy it - agree that I don't think it's as rigorous as the UK version, but it's still great telly.

LIZS · 08/12/2010 14:42

I think I preferred it when the losing team voted the weakest one off as the format seems to have become more predictable. Compulsive though. I want Julie's cookbook for Christmas but not sure if available in UK.

OP posts:
Nettee · 08/12/2010 16:20

I am a bit annoyed with the program since Marion went out. since then they are picking off all the best chefs and it seems to be down more to luck than skill. Can't believe Alvin has gone too now. Don't think the winner will be even close to being the best.

Do generally enjoy it though and I am pleased they stopped the voting off thing. Have enjoyed some of the different elimination challenges.

Rocinante · 08/12/2010 16:33

I'm just about still watching it - since Marion and Jonathan went I think it's lost its best cooks and the others have much bigger flaws.

Callum - makes lots of errors (not plating up 5 dishes this week, unable to make sponge pudding etc) which he seems to get away with because he's young.

Jimmy - only does curry (ok, and one cake)

Claire - hit and miss

Adam - was completely average, but now Marion and Jonathan have gone his dishes stand out a bit more.

Have I missed someone?

I'm desperately trying not to see the results - can't imagine which one of the above it will be!

LIZS · 09/12/2010 08:47

agree it isnlt the "best" cooks left now nor would I buy either's book.

OP posts:
SnowMuchToBits · 10/12/2010 21:42

LIZs - you can get the bok over here via Amazon - dh bought me Julie Goodwin's book for my birthday!

I also agree some of the best people have gone, especially Marion and Alvin. Haven't watched the final yet (we're a bit behind as ds has been away earlier this week, so we are catching up).

I really wanted the last four to be Marion, Alvin, Adam and Claire, but only 2 of those made it, and now Claire has gone I really want Adam to win.

Last year I actually thought Poh was a better cook than Julie, although still liked Julie as a person. Will be more disappointed if Callum wins this year, as I think he is too inconsistent, and think Adam is more inventive/creative.

TwoIfBySea · 10/12/2010 22:23

And? Happy Adam won? :)

I thought this year was really good although I was annoyed at Courtney and Jimmy coming back as they seemed to have a bit of an attitude. I'm so glad Callum made the finals as he has a great future ahead of him but I'm really glad Adam won. Don't think I'd buy his cook book though but I'd absolutely love to eat his food!

Might just treat myself to Julie's cook book, is it quite good, Snow?

LIZS · 12/12/2010 10:18

Of the two I think Adam deserved it but found myself rooting for Callum towards tge end as he really upped his game in the final rounds.

OP posts:
foxinsocks · 12/12/2010 10:23

I loved Alvin too.

I also watched teh French masterchef on holiday! Thought their criticisms were so much more damning than ours - it was fantastic!

Poor Callum - in the uk, I think they would have rigged it so it was closer but it seemed pretty obvious, after round 1 of the final, that Adam would win!

They also seem to hate anyone losing there and a lot of the losers (in the last few rounds) seem to have been given prizes/jobs anyway!

ninedragons · 12/12/2010 10:27

You might get Junior Masterchef, which we have had here in Australia recently.

I was a bit sceptical that they would be able to make it work without having villains (all contestants between about 8 and 13), but it was really sweet and the kids did some amazing stuff.
