hilarious viewing - cringetastic

This may have been discussed last week, I'm not sure, but are any of them mners? I am finding the woman from West Sussex very bunting cupcake annoying....her handbag/shoe biscuits were hardly original were they (I'm sure I've seen very similar in Waitrose.....)but she was so pleased with herself about them!

I watch it for Mel and Sue. They are hilarious. Sue especially- loved her in that Supersizers series!

BellaBearisWideAwake · 24/08/2010 20:40

I love Mel and Sue. Just read Mel's pregnancy memoir again (From Here to Maternity) and feel I know her! She's like, my best friend

MollieO · 24/08/2010 20:42

I'm waiting for them to introduce the strap line "Middle class doesn't get any tougher than this" a la Masterchef. Grin

It is incredibly twee in a slap the contestants in the face kind of way.

spudmasher · 24/08/2010 20:42

Oh that sounds like a good read, Bella. I will seek it out.

LostArt · 24/08/2010 20:42

Mel & Sue and cake - of course I'm watching.

BellaBearisWideAwake · 24/08/2010 20:44

It's a bit silly, but as Sue is quoted on the cover "it's the best humorous pregnancy memoir that Mel's ever written" or somesuch

MakemineaGandT · 24/08/2010 20:45

oh and now the annoying one is doing pistachio macaroons and claiming it as a clever innovation of hers as she "doesn't like ground almonds (yeah right).......I think Nigella got there first dahling......

OP posts:
spudmasher · 24/08/2010 20:46

Waiting for the policewoman to start sobbing over a macaroon

orienteerer · 24/08/2010 20:47

Love it

LostArt · 24/08/2010 20:47

Mollie - "Middle class doesn't get any tougher than this" Grin That's the funniest thing I've heard all day!

orienteerer · 24/08/2010 20:48

Ranulph Fiennes looking a bit rough, in need of a shave.

spudmasher · 24/08/2010 20:49

I loved the fact about digestives earlier- apparently they stop you from farting....as if I needed the excuse!

maktaitai · 24/08/2010 20:50

i loved the first one with the cake but tbh I know 4 people without even thinking hard who can cook better than this lot. How did they recruit them? Where is the mass auditions programme full of people who have never seen an oven before? Why only 10 who aren't that great?

[disclaimer: I couldn't do any of this baking myself]

spudmasher · 24/08/2010 20:52

Do you reckon Mary Berry spits or swallows?

BellaBearisWideAwake · 24/08/2010 20:52

God, I love macaroons. I wish they weren't that expensive. Or that I could cook them, in fact.

orienteerer · 24/08/2010 20:53

Police Sgt about to go me thinks?

spudmasher · 24/08/2010 20:55

Did you see the labels on the draws behind the judges??? Mel...Sue....Bunting....Cutlery....
Hilarious!

TheDailyWail · 24/08/2010 21:19

I love Sue Perkins - why don't they do Light Lunch anymore? I loved that show.

Katisha · 24/08/2010 21:22

Yes the shoe/handbags biscuits come from Peggy Porschen

I have never tried making the macarons though - might give it a try. There seems to be a lot of mystique about them.

I still reckon though that it's basically incredibly hard to do successful baking with an over you don't know. I bet even Paul Hollywood would find it hard with a brand new oven he wasn't used to. So how on earth would you know quite where to pitch the scone temperature - if it's fan oven you are even more at a disadvantage, unless you usually cook with one.

Cakes and biscuits that I've made for years have all come out wrong in the new (well, year old now) oven.

turnitup · 26/08/2010 18:16

Im really loving this show.

I did think to myself it would be good to see the judges at the front baking too.

carries · 26/08/2010 20:24

I love this show cos it's about baking. Learning loads from Mary and Paul. Wondering how they chose the 10 bakers, some of them just average.

cyb · 26/08/2010 20:25

Is it just me...or were quite a few of the contestants absolutely rubbish cooks? My mates cook better cakes and biscuits than that lot

Katisha · 26/08/2010 22:53

I got a bit fed up with Paul H making up ridiculous rules about scones though. I like it when they split and rise erratically.

I suspect he will be incredibly fussy and rule-bound about bread next week.

maktaitai · 26/08/2010 23:01

yy katisha. i think they were all thinking 'technical technical' about the scones and therefore cocked up (measuring the height ffs!) rather than just making lovely scones. I've never even heard of eggwashing scones, that explains why the last lot I had were all shiny.

TwoIfBySea · 26/08/2010 23:35

You know, of all the scones I've made (and I've been making them since aged 8) I don't think I followed any of those rules.

Still got yummy scones though.

I like this show, but then I liked Sophie Dahl's programme that got slated. It is nice, comforting tv, not too taxing on the brain.

Agree that these bakers are in no way the best they could find.
