Did anyone watch The Great British Bake Off last night?

I gather it's been on before? It looks like a daytime type of thing to me; I've never seen it.

I thought it was quite funny in a homely way. Bit of a waste of Mel and Sue - who should be back together much more on tv imo - but good to see them.

Poor chap with his beetroot chocolate cake and sunken loaf...(Grin)

Some of those cakes looked straight out of the Cake Wreck siteGrin

I did! I know, poor Mark bless him- you would've thought after not getting rave reviews for his marmalade cake he would have played it safe next time around- beetroot?!

I was so impressed by the forest floor cake, and the handmade truffles as well. Would love to be able to bake at all like that.

TheMoonOnAStick · 18/08/2010 16:45

Ah! Another viewerSmile

Yes, the forest floor cake! I wasn't sure it'd be any good but wow! Amazing wasn't it?

I think it'd wasted round here though. My lot'd guzzle it down too fast to notice hand made chocolate toadstools.

Mary Berry is one of my cookery goddesses..I have quite a few of here books and her brownies are gorgeous!

Me too, I got ridiculously excited when I realised she was one of the judges. Her lemon drizzle cake from 'simple cakes' is about the extent of my current repertoire though, sadly.

I love her books. I find her very trustworthy - a bit like good old Delia.

So it's bicuits next week. Will have to record it as we're away (I guess a packet of Penguins isn't going to make the gradeGrinWink)

I watched it. I wish there had been a bit more on technique rather than the usual racking up the tension rubbish. It is amazing how all the victoria sandwiches could be so different despite using the same recipe tough.

But my beef with this programme is that you can probably turn out perfect cake after perfect cake at home because you know your own oven. but having to use a strange oven for competition could make all the difference between triumph and disaster. I still haven't got the hang of the new one we got over a year ago yet.

As someone who dabbles in chocolate making I am amazed he got all his chocolate mushrooms and the rest done in the time available. Can't remember whether they actually liked the cake in the middle or not, but I think it's a common problem with spectacular-looking cakes - they look great and taste dull - witness all the vastly overpriced cupcakes in London - all swirls of buttercream on top of a dry old cake a lot of the time.

I'm looking forward to the biscuits next week as I used to do a fair amount of faffy decorated biscuit making until I finally blew a gasket over the amount of time it all took!

I 'd like to know what happens to all the SMEG fridges and expensive kitchen worktops and distressed tables when its finished?

(I'll have 'em)

Katisha · 18/08/2010 17:16

Yes where DO they go?
Do they get sold off? Or saved for another series? Or chucked in a skip?

cyb · 18/08/2010 17:22

I reckon the production team has first pickings. it did make me laugh, the artfully draped union jack bunting, the vintage biscuit tins

TheMoonOnAStick · 18/08/2010 17:24

I expect the use them for Sophie Dahl's tv kitchen.

Yes it did look like the kitchen dept in John Lewis...

KurriKurri · 19/08/2010 13:27

I liked the woman who put a chocolate covered pineapple on top of her cake. Wow!Grin

A programme about cake, is always going to be good in my book.

They were getting so upset over it as well, crying over failed cakes. They don't get so wound up on Masterchef either.

Perhaps baking is so personal that it brings out emotions - very Like Water For Chocolate!
