13 yo dd, acne and contraceptive pill

OK, my 13 yo dd has quite bad acne on her face, back and chest.

We tried the over-the-counter spot creams. Rubbish.

We have tried the prescribed spot creams. The GP said to go back if they didn't work (have given them a good trial and I think she has used them properly most of the time).

I think the next thing he will suggest is the contraceptive pill (Dianette?). I'm not sure how I feel about introducing artificial hormones at this young age.

Any thoughts?

I would rather she saw a dermatologist before trying Dianette.

Dianette can only be prescribed for a short term anyway, so she may benefit from a proper dermatology assessment.

I think there are other things first, AF, but if the GP reckons it's safe it probably is. They can prescribe long-term low-dose antibiotics too, which you might feel better about. I suppose I would be uncomfortable with my dd feeling she's good to go sex-wise as she got older, which is obviously not safe, but you and I are the sort of harridans vigilant mothers that wouldn't let that happen, right?

you betcha BOF !!

ok, maybe antibiotics would be better then, will suggest that (taking her to docs on Monday)

she copes very well with her acne tbh, seems to have no major hang-ups about it (in fact I think I feel worse for her IYSWIM)

some days it is really red and unsightly and when she is tempted to pick (rarely) it looks really bad

funnily enough, I escaped the teenage spot thing

Me too, I get it mildly now though on my chin and had dianette for a while. GP said antibiotics would be better though, but I knew they would give me galloping thrush...mmm, I am so attractive

I'm sure you'll get it sorted, there's lots of things to try!

Sidge · 21/03/2009 13:30

I'm on Dianette too - I had fabulous skin in my teens then throughout my 30s it has got worse and worse.

I blame having children

BitOfFun · 21/03/2009 13:31

I know- little fuckers

AnyMothersDayFucker · 21/03/2009 13:41

I am cursed with cold sores, not spots and was all through my childhood. I have one now, a lovely big cornflake on my bottom lip

I blame my mother

Sorry for delay.
Yes it is an antibiotic. Nothing else was working for him.

AnyMothersDayFucker · 22/03/2009 11:17

If she copes with it OK then why are you thinking about putting her on Dianette?

I have had acne since I was about 12 and it really doesn't bother me very much. In fact since it has pretty well gone (I'm pregnant) I've noticed other things to do with my complexion that if anything annoy me more!

Why not just teach her to use a reasonable concealer to cover the worst bits?
