i think it has to be in the main driver's name. ie, your daughters.
i remember seeing something about it in the news after some kid had a crash and they weren't insured because they'd only put him as a named driver on the parents insurance, even though it was his own car and he was the main driver.

I paid £580 for my first ever lot of insurance. that was for a 1.6 beetle.

it varies so much though, i would just shop around and see what you can find.

i would be wary of going with the cheapest though as i have had 2 really bad experiences when involved in accidents which weren't my faulty and creally crappy insurance companies not wanting to fight my corner.
so, i would go with someone who has a good reputation, not necessarily the cheapest.

oh, and of course you should do what my parents did,. make me pay for my own car and all associated costs!

DD is a named driver on my 2nd car. I use it to go shopping & to sports centres in a few times a week & occassional commute to ENSURE 100% that I remain the main driver.

Last year was around £550 when she was a learner. Renewal received at £775 (now she has passed) but we have got them down to £660 and she earns a no claims discount - only valid if she takes out a policy with Admiral though!

Don't know if we can afford it at the moment (DH unemployed) so we may have to take her off

my car is apparently too sporty for norwich union to even consider adding my 18yo daughter to my insurance for it, she's still a learner but apparently she has to be over 21 - it is only a Peugeot, not a Veyron or something

land rover is not really suitable for her, it is just a rattly old unsteerable van, not a posh or particularly novice drive

in the end it worked out cheaper to get her her own Ka and she has her own insurance, which she pays £50 a month

i hated it at the time, but now really appreciate my parents having that attitude with me.
they didn't have a car anyway, so I had no choice but to get one.
I worked for 2 years to save enough to buy my car, get it insured and MOT'd and it was worth every second

DD was insured as a learner on DH's 1.4 Skoda, that loaded an extra £200 on to our premiums, I'm just about to add DS and he'll load it by another £250. Neither will be on my 2.0l DTi as the insurance goes through the roof.

DD now owns a KA and has her own insurance with me as a named driver, the insurance for that is £580.

Meant to say the Skoda is insured through Tesco but when it came to insuring in her own right Diamond worked out far cheaper for her even though Tesco took into account the fact she'd been driving for 18 months without a claim.

smudge -£200 isn't bad for your dd on the skoda

my dsd has a peugeot 106 it is in my husbands name and stays at our house as she is a learner. She is insured as a named driver with my husband and it cost around the £300 mark in total. I can't remember who they are with but will check for you

My sister (19) was insured as a learner on my mum's Ka. However, the premium rocketed when she passed her test so they took her off. She's now living with us, and insured on DH's Punto. That's covered with the AA. They said no twice to insuring her, but when I rang to say we were cancelling the policy, they managed to add her. It makes our policy £90 a month instead of £20 and she is paying the difference. She currently has sole use of the car as DH is away at sea. It's not cheap, but it happens to all of us at the start and I remember paying over £1K for my first years insurance in a Fiat Seicento (899cc!) She's currently working full time though so she can afford it!

My BIL is a driving instuctor and he told me that he tells all of his pupils to put him down on their insurance as a named driver. because he's an advanced driver it brings the premiums down. Might be worth a try?

can you put your driving instructor on your policy as a named driver-?? will get dd to ask her instructor.

DH was with Directline, paying about £330 fully comp. His renewal came up just before DS's 17th birthday. Directline quoted £1800 - they were just not interest in insuring teenage boys.

We did the moneysupermarket.com thing, and came up with Quinn insurance. They are charging about £750. No one else came close - the next one was about £1200, and there were a few in that bracket.
