Son dying his hair

DS is 13 and wants to dye his hair black. I've said he can, school are not bothered so I don't see a problem with it.

Question is do I do it myself with a home-dye or take him to hair dressers to have it done properly?

Are you at all experienced with home hair dye? If yeah, then I would absolutely. Only thing that would worry me is that with dark colours it's easy to smear across your face, I always have dye round my hair line and occasionally elsewhere on my face for a couple of days after going dark.

I'd send him to the hairdressers', definitely. But that's just because I wouldn't want the hassle.

Depends on whether he wants truly black -clearly fake - or something more subtle. With that level of darkness, keeping in natural is hard.

Mindalina - after you've applied the dye, take a cotton swab soaked in surgical spirits around your hairline, ears etc. Works wonders.

Home dye is easy. If he's starting at 13 he needs to learn how to do it.

It's going to be expensive to take him to the hairdressers every time he needs his roots done.

If his hair's a bit longer (I'm assuming he's Emo or similar) then home dye will be fine, just smear his ears and forehead with vaseline first. Short hair I should imagine is more difficult to look neat.

Surely it's a rite of passage to have at least one slightly-dodgy home dye?

yes emo. He wants red streaks put in too but I said we'll see about that after he's got used to dying it black.

do it at home. Don't take him to a hairdresser - that would be madness!

Oh yes, I quite like the quirky, ott hair styles. He can do it whatever colour he likes, I just want him to ease into it first rather than go all out and end up looking like a paint factory has exploded all over him.

when i home dyed my hair i used to smear a thick layer of vaseline or nivea around the hair line, which significantly reduced the amount of staining

any dye that did get on my skin , i removed using nail polish remover and cotton wool

my mate does it for me at her salon now for free

i use this not in black though, red. i am always on about it on hairdye threads, is really good, no bleach so doesn't bugger up hair and lasts about 6 weeks in red, which usually comes off before anythign else does. black stays longer.

it doesn't stain skin mcuh at all either, in fact once i did it without gloves. that was a mistake, washing up liquid is good to get it off too.

my dd has been home -dyeing for years, just use one colour for now, get the practice in before you try and add two colours ime a right faff, which will bugger your towels

Yeah i would just use a home dye kit. theyre really cheap. little tip :
Once dye is on put a carrier bag over head and tie or clip it ther.

He's not ginger is he? Every time I see a young lad with their beautiful ginger eyebrows and roots showing despite the black dye it breaks my heart. Wife to a reformed dyer and mother to a potential strawberry-blond baby boy.

do it at home with lots of old clothes and towels everywear, don't do black, do very dark brown, and hairspray on cotton wool will take off any excess on his face and ears. btw if you do a really crap job you might put him off for life, therefore saving lots of money!
