13yo daughter is having friend/peer issues at school. Will transferring schools help?

Hi,

Our 13yo daughter is having friendship trouble at her school. We are deciding if it’s best to transfer her to another middle school in a different district (We are currently with LAUSD).

We notice when she is at home for winter or summer breaks she is usually well. She seems happier, more talkative, more comfortable. But when she goes back to school her behavior completely changes. The first day back to school she is excited to put on her outfit and has energy to get up and get there. But after just a week, she has a low mood, doesn’t want to engage with us and just completely shuts down. She then asks if she can stay home from school and some days it’s really hard for us to get her to go to school.

She does struggle with mental health issues. Which Dad and I are trying our best to support. She takes medication but doesn’t want to do talk therapy. I will say the medication has helped.

Since 7th grade, the reasons why she doesn’t want to go to school is “my friends kicked me out of the group again and I can’t deal with it” “my friends make rumors about me and I’m so sick of it” “my friends aren’t talking to me and I can’t deal with it anymore”.

We have family pairing on TikTok and I try to monitor that. But I do notice her reposts have the topic of gossip and she comments “people always making stuff up about me, I literally CANNOT”.

I have spoke with her counselors and they’ve told me that my child tells the counselor that she isn’t sure if they are her friends, that she isn’t she if they even like her etc. and the counselor told me that some of the girls from her friend group tell the counselors that my daughter is “too much” and “don’t want to deal with her”.

There have also been instances where the school calls me and tells her that one of her friends parents was shown a TikTok from my daughter and the posts is about teacher memes and my daughter hates when the teacher moves the slide too fast angry face.

I’ve been called to the school 3 times now and the counselor explains someone from her friend groups parent is reporting what my child posts. But her posts are not dangerous/concerning.

This friend group issue has been going on since 7th grade. Dad and I try our best to support her, we do family outings and she is in softball (which she enjoys). But when it comes down to going to school she doesn’t want to go.

I ask my child if she wants to transfer but my child says “not yet maybe I’ll keep trying”. I have told my child a new environment could really help but my daughter keeps saying no. It is frustrating because she says she doesn’t want to transfer but tries to go to school but seems so defeated by it.

Parents, I would some advice, guidance or what we can do better to support her. I remember being that age (never again) and I just want her to come home happy.

Should we just do the transfer? I have tried working with the school and I have gone to a few meetings and I get the feeling they are treating her as a problem.

What could we do better to help support her?

Thank you

You skirt over this but this is serious for a 13 year old and would indicate that plucking her out and plopping her in to a different school is not going to achieve anything

Thank you, we are working on it. We are just trying to find solutions on how to help support her.

Get rid of tik tok. It sounds like it’s causing a lot of unnecessary issues

Focus on the mental health conditions
She needs to get in to therapy

Easy win right there

Okay, we have an appointment Monday. She does group therapy but is hesitant to one on one therapy. It’s been tough but slowly but surely I hope we get her there.

@LoftyLimePeer I second the therapy, and specifically individual sessions.
I know that for some children a change of environment can make all the difference, but the way you describe your daughter it sounds as if it might not be the way to go for her.
The fact that her peers describe her as “too much” is noteworthy. This is not in any way a criticism towards your child. She needs to be able to be however she is, but sometimes the way a person acts is down not simply to an individual’s personality, but can also be an expression of their mental health.
Friend issues at this age are run of the mill. Mini fall outs, changes in friendships groups, best friends break ups are all typical .
Serious enough mental health issues which require medication and therapy are more serious. You should prioritise this .

Yes move her. I moved DD and she was so much happier, I should have moved her sooner. My cousin moved her DD too who’s life changed for the better too, who also realised she should have moved her sooner

Thank you for your response. We are supporting her with her mental health issues but my issue is she doesn’t want to go to school. It is frustrating because a part of me wants her to keep trying but it’s hard see her come home from school so defeated.

No, don't move her. She'll end up with the same shit, different bucket. Middle school is hard.

As suggested, get rid of Tiktok. Monitor her phone. Set up parental controls.

Ask the counselor what is meant by "too much" (comment of friends). Does she overshare? Does she present as angry or combative? Does she fail to get humor or read the room?

Individual therapy should help a lot. Look at the credentials of the therapist and let your daughter give you feedback about her comfort level with the therapist - one size does not fit all, and you may need to try a few before she finds one she feels comfortable with.

Are you in the UK?

Adjust your expectations of how she should feel when she comes home from school. I guarantee only about 2% of the 13 year olds in her school come home feeling they've had a good day from a social point of view. 13 year old girls can be monstrously cruel to each other.

Listen to her woes, assure her high school will be a big improvement, and encourage her in the softball. Does she have friends on the team? Often, the sporty girls are better friendship material than girls whose idea of a good time is spending money at the mall.

Are there any other activities she might like to try? Theater, dance, any volunteering sponsored by the school?

Is she trying too hard to get in with the very popular girls and ignoring nice, unpopular girls who would treat her better?

Sounds like they are in California (LAUSD = Los Angeles Unified School District)

Middle school was also awful for my DD with similar friendship issues and in the end we did take her out and sent her to another school after spring break. It really helped. She has started high school now and is doing a lot better.

I dont understand though why you would go straight to medication over therapy. Im also in the US and the amount of kids taking various prescribed meds is actually concerning. Therapy should be the first intervention with drugs only prescribed in severe cases, or as a last resort.
