Teen daughter fluctuating heart rate

Anyone else's teen mention a fast heart rate? My teen (15) had a fast heart rate in the night a few weeks ago of 115 (I have an app as I myself have had some heart issues which resulted in me being cardioverted) but it soon went down. Over the weekend she has complained of her chest feeling slightly tight and on checking her heart rate, it was elevated whilst resting (over 100) but fluctuated to below 100 then just over again. Obviously everyone's heart rate fluctuates but I don't know whether this is something to worry about or whether it is part of being a teen?! She has a monitor app now which maybe isn't such a good idea as she keeps checking it. We're making sure she stays hydrated etc

I would recommend contacting Cardiac Risk in the Young. They do an ECG to check for underlying heart issues. You can sign up for notifications for when they are in your area. DD went because her resting heart is fast even though she is super fit, and it all came back ok.

How are you measuring her heart rate? You mention an app but how is the app measuring? How did you know her heart rate was 115 in the night? Do you know what her heart rate is normally? Can you check it manually? Does she have any other health conditions such as asthma or reflux? Lots of questions, sorry.
Constantly checking it is likely to increase it due to anxiety.

I have an app due to my heart issues and when I went to the cardiologist he confirmed it was accurate. You put your finger over your camera light and it measures it that way. She came into our room in the night and said her heart was racing so I put her on my app and it read 115. KShe has no other health issues. I do agree that her checking it regularly may make it worse. She does drink coffee but not regularly and she's had a small lemonade today in the way of fizzy drinks. She had just got out of the shower tonight after not doing much else today so we said the burst of energy and heat may not have helped!

Low iron can cause this. A lot of teenage girls have low iron.

Elieza · 06/09/2026 22:49

she defo needs to get checked out.

Which is the obvious thing to check first OP.

Worth getting checked out. 115 is high for a healthy teen (who isn't exercising) but would be low for an actual arrythmia. I'd at least want a baseline 12 lead ECG, and if this happens a few times, I'd be looking at a 24 hour ECG, to try to catch the heart rhythm during an episode.

Look at pots. It’s common to start in teens. I’ll pop a link on.

iron and b12 also worth a check.

Funnily enough her mates have mentioned POTs to her in the past?! I have a GP appointment in the week so think I'll bring it up and see what they say. I also have a cardiology appt this month myself so again, I'll mention it!
Thank you all for your help and advice.... appreciate it x

Get here on the cardiology list if you can’t afford private insist the gp refers her. The waits are a year long now for adult cardiology.
