What do your young teens do in the summer holidays? 14 yo DD would like to hang round town with mates all day…has refused to volunteer at the library. We have got her in a tennis camp for a week and two weeks are family holiday.

I seem to recall visiting various relatives (we have none) and Mum didn’t work so we must have had days out. I do work though!
What does everyone do??

Pool days at home, lots and lots of days out. Visit family a lot, they also go for a week to grandparents in Devon and another set of grandparents (they have three) take them abroad for a week every year.

I actually think hanging round town all
day with your mates is an important part of being a teenager. Good to do other stuff to break it up a bit, but time spent with your peers is also developmentally important, even when it looks like they’re not doing much . Such fond memories of teenage days dossing around town and park

My Ds aged 14 will be mostly gaming online with his friends from school - he goes to an autism specialist school and the children come from across the county so none are close enough to play out / hang out without a lot of arranging it. He will have a couple of days out with friends though. Mostly he will be pottering round doing stuff with me, going to the city looking round the shops, maybe a museum or something. He gets very burnt out from school and socialising though and just enjoys time at home, painting model kits etc. I think there’s a lot of pressure on teens to be doing something all the time and actually it’s good for them to have their own space.

Away for about half of the holiday - family holiday, a few days at grandparents, summer camp. When home all day, hangs out with friends during the day, will do some training in the morning before heading out, in evenings will play chess / boardgames with sibling, reads, has some screen time. Hopefully next year they'll have some work to do.
