She had a massive tantrum - tears and attitude - on the phone when I’m at work to tell me she wasn’t going to college because her hair was frizzy and EVERYONE yes EVERYONE would thinks she’s is a frizzy haired troll.

my reply was - If you don’t go to college there no phone, tv, and pocket money for 2 months

She went and no one said anything about her hair!teenage angst

Bit of a harsh punishment for a teenager having a moment.

TheBlueHotel · 09/10/2025 18:52

What a stupid punishment to threaten

Haggisfish3 · 09/10/2025 18:52

Two months!! A day maybe. I agree it seems overly harsh and unenforceable tbh!

youalright · 09/10/2025 18:56

Well it worked she went

Arlanymor · 09/10/2025 19:00

I think the level of dramatic punishment reflected the dramatic nature of the tantrum in the first place - and it worked. Hyperbole meets hyperbole and makes the point about what a ridiculous issue it was. If it had only been a day she might well have thought it was a reasonable trade off!

You know your DD best OP, I hope that things are calmer this evening! One of my goddaughters is especially dramatic and used to have meltdown at least once a day when she was 15/16 over completely ridiculous things - luckily she is getting better and calmer as she gets older. It also helps that her younger sister - who she is very close to - will roll her eyes and say: "God Cynthia, it's really NOT that dramatic!!" Which tends to bring her back down to earth!

LoyalMember · 10/10/2025 20:11

Excellent and well measured response from you, and it worked. Frizzy hair? What a daft wee lassie...😆

Agree; really emotionally inept.

chunkychoos · 10/10/2025 20:20

Where on earth does she get her over-reaction trait from?!

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 10/10/2025 20:37

Going to college so she’s 17/18?

You both need to get a grip.

OnceIn · 10/10/2025 20:48

If she at college I’d have left her to it. If she wants to bunk off because of her hair then let her. I think at 17/18 she can make her own decisions.

I remember leaving school saying I was ill because of a bad hair day.

Pricelessadvice · 10/10/2025 21:43

Oh OP, you know you are meant to sit down with your teen and ask them about their feelings and let them express themself and help them to overcome their anxiety in whatever way they need…
🙄

Good job! She was being ridiculous, so you replied with an equally ridiculous response. And it worked! She got over her tantrum and the world didn’t end.

Be aware that you’ll get slaughtered on here for your ‘harsh punishment’. People take things very seriously!

Jamesblonde2 · 10/10/2025 21:50

Probably PMT

DaisyChain505 · 10/10/2025 21:58

You do realise that her hair probably wasn’t the thing that she was really upset about it was just the straw that broke the camel’s back so to say.

Have you tried sitting down with her and having a chat and asking what’s going on rather than jumping to extreme punishments?

ObliviousCoalmine · 10/10/2025 22:00

Lol. The irony of mocking a dramatic teen when you have an equally dramatic reaction (and then go one further and post it on the internet).

BunnyLake · 29/01/2026 13:05

I’d probably have said ok Crystal Tipps have today off, sort your hair out (clips, hairbands, whatever) and go back tomorrow.

oops didn't realise it’s an old thread. Just popped up from nowhere. 😳

NerrSnerr · 29/01/2026 13:10

Is there more to it? Are people bullying her? It was dramatic of her but unless this is her usual behaviour I would wonder if there’s a reason she didn’t want to go.

Soonenough · 29/01/2026 13:30

I can't imagine calling and interrupting my parent ' s workday at 17 to say that . Different world now I guess.
