Hi all my DS has started college September he’s 16. He has to sit extra maths and English classes as he failed them. He looks again to be doing very little work again in class. Never dealt with a college before is he too old for me to contact college to ask about how the learning is done, homework etc? I know that he is aware college are not going to contact me in many circumstances. This I’m worried leading to a free rein for him to do as he pleases. So confused ! Thanks

I think it's fine to contact college. DS college emailed me (and DS) quite a lot of detail about how things are done (including info on resitting English/maths although he's not doing that) right at the start.
If you have a general overview on how it all works, you can get a feel for whether he's doing the work or not.

I think you do need to keep an eye out for anything troubling, they are much more likely to give warnings, etc to the kids directly and not loop parents in. It's a nice change from school in many ways though, as I don't need to know exactly how many times a day DS was asked to tuck his shirt in.

Yes you can. I work in a college, email his personal tutor with any concerns. Lots do

@EarthlyNightshade thanks yes that’s helpful at least if I ask how classes are run and if homework set. I’m worried without me on to him he is likely to not do much.
