Part time jobs for 16 year olds

My 16 year old daughter is thinking of looking for a little job for over the summer. Does anyone have any ideas what 16 year olds can do?

She's staying on at school, in September, for A-levels.

Mine works in a cafe. It has been really good for her

RoseUnder · 25/05/2024 07:30

Cafe also a good option - helps improve social skills, assertiveness, team work - plus tips especially if they’re friendly!

Shop work comes with bonus of staff discount if it’s a favourite clothes shop (sp they can spend all their earnings on trendy clothes 😀).

Mine both worked in a supermarket. The hourly rate is much higher typically than cafes etc. also there is also a large group of youngsters working for them, so they often make lifelong friends

also supermarkets often allow you to transfer from your local store to the one near your uni (if she eventually goes to uni), meaning she could work at a store near uni during term time and then allow you to work your contractual hours back at your local home store during the holidays

my 22 year old has been working at the same supermarket since he was 16 Years old, transferring between our local one when he’s home for the holidays (often with extra hours when they have offered available) and then one near his uni. It’s really good they do that! My 18 yr old has been working at the same store part time since he was 16

as a comparison, my eldest when he was 16 was working at a go kart place for the then min wage for a 16 yr old, which was £5.25 or something an hour. When he moved to the supermarket he was earning double that hourly rate

Cafes.
Mine is slightly younger but scored a seasonal cafe job. If you're near any touristy places that helps. She's just in the kitchen but there's waitressing, pot wash etc and at that age it's great to make some money. Mine is delighted with her money and shopping trips!

If she gets qualifications then lifeguarding (qualification takes about a week and costs £300-£500) or cricket refereeing?

Newlittlerescue · 25/05/2024 07:41

Garden centre another excellent option.

A lot depends on where you live and what's around you. We are rural so have to drive DS 20 mins to his job. Fine for Saturdays (as current) but it will be a bigger commitment after exams when he's hoping to work most days - that's 1 hour 20 in the car for me each day! (Luckily I WFH)

However I think it's worth it for the work ethic/confidence/social skills/teamwork etc.

One of mine works at JD Sports, the other at Papa Johns. Both let them work only when back at home during the uni holidays. They just pick and choose.

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 25/05/2024 08:29

Macdonalds, shops, cafes etc.

Most places will take 16yo although check what they pay as some places take the piss.

Indeed.com is a good starting place.

MidLifeWoman · 25/05/2024 08:32

Dcs worked at McDonalds and KFC. Both are more or less run by teenagers and they enjoyed working there. Ds is now at uni and can still work at KFC when he comes home for the summer.

mambojambodothetango · 25/05/2024 08:47

Is there a holiday scheme/camp for younger kids she could work at?

ThelmaLouise72 · 26/05/2024 19:06

We aren't in a tourist town but we have the usual shops and supermarkets. I'll keep my eyes open!

It’s ridiculous how hard it is to get a job age 16 round here. Dd tried McDonald’s but they only want over 18s at the moment. Costa did an online interview, offered her a job then sent an email saying she’d been unsuccessful with no explanation. She’s intelligent, polite, and dedicated. Honestly, she’d be an absolute asset but locally they don’t seem to want teens.
