Job trial 16 year old - Unpaid

Hi there,

16-year- old DD applied for Saturday job at local hairdressers. She has had a trial today. 3 hours unpaid.

The manager has had several girls trialing and on the Saturday last month and this month.

Is it me or is this a quick way of gaining unpaid labour?

My daughter has been invited back for another 3 hour shift paid in half term.

She washed 4 people's hair, swept the floors and made lots of tea and coffee.

Just interested in what others think and have experienced.

It's normal in restaurants. I've done it in a few places (no child exploitation as I was in my thirties at the time). They only pay you if you get the job in the places I ended up working. These were high end places with Michelin stars etc. You'd possibly know who the chefs were if you liked food.

If she gets another trial shift I think you probably should let her handle it. Sorry she didn't get it!

This happened to my dd . I think they were basically using these trials as an extra set of hands on a Saturday.

Wow. Shame for your daughter but I think the lesson to be learned here is that she needs to be able to stand up for herself and query things if she's not happy with them and you need to back off. She's 16 not 14.

Even on a trial they should still get paid something. To have different kids every Saturday is taking the piss for such a basic job.
