What apps do older teens message on?

Snapchat.

You can download it too and ask them to share their location with you and vice versa.

It works very well.

I haven't come across Discord. In what way is it different from all the other options?

DD (23) has been using Snapchat since she was about 15. She doesn't use WhatsApp, and only uses Messenger to message me.

Snapchat or occasionally instagram messaging with my older teenagers. Recently had a graduate join my team and she had to download WhatsApp when we asked if she’d like to join the team chat 😂

My first year students sniggered when I suggested they set up a WhatsApp group for a study group. They use Snapchat.

I find the non UK ones use it more, though.

I have no idea and suspect that is the beauty of it. I know there are multiple different channels & conversations as well as 121 chats. I think it is totally limited to U23s.
