14 year old boy seeing 16 year old girl

My 14 year old is in a relationship with an older girl of 16. He's tall for his age and looks the same age as her. He also acts old for his age, so their relationship doesn't look odd IFSIM.

But, the fact remains, he's only 14 and she's more experienced and emotionally mature than him. It's his first relationship.

They don't seem to actually meet that much out of school, a lot of their relationship is online. It's early days, however, maybe that'll change.

I don't know her at all - she's been around a few times, seemed nice enough, but didn't say much when I was there.

What should I be advising him (other than the obvious staying safe talk, he's had ages ago). This is totally new territory for us.

How big is the age gap? Is she just 16 and him nearly 15?

you know him and her (potentially best)
and I know the age old “girls mature faster”….
but I can guarantee I was a very immature teen, by 16, even 19 I was no where as mature as some boys my age, let alone girls
i know my own DD is not as mature as other girls her age - while she’s happily playing video games they are trying really hard to appear grown up
keep the communication lines open, ask general questions, for all you know she’s a bit inmature and it’s also her first relationship and it’s all very innocent

He's year 9 and she's year 11 - just finished her GCSEs.

He's 14.5, I don't know her exact age, but she has to be minimum 19 months older going on when he first mentioned her and said she was 16.

Yes, I do wonder if DS appeals to her partly as he's not pushy, sexually, like older boys can be.

But then again, I really don't know her so I may be just projecting things on to her that aren't true.

That’s quite a difference, Yr 9 to Yr 11. Are they gaming together? It might all be fairly innocent.

That’s the best case scenario, where she’s a young 16, and he’s appealing since he’s more a friend, all nice and innocent first love
although I also knew a guy in high school, similar age gap with his GF, that loved that she was “experienced” - the girl in that case used to date older guys, and was with him since he was just nice… lasted about 6 months
my best advice would be, don’t judge, talk to him (same way as if the girl was in his year) - try to keep the lines of communication open
