DS 17 shoplifted today

Went for a lovely family day out, got home and DS 17 proudly showed me something he stole from one of the shops we’ve been to.

He’s never stolen before (to my knowledge). We are too far away from where we visited to return it.

He has been brought up with strong values and I think good parenting from his Dad and I.

Please advise how to deal with this.

A key ring. Pretty normal behaviour for that age.

I dont know a single one of my friends who's shoplifted. But ok.

Literally all my friends stole stuff and so did I. It was just what we stupidly did at 13 years of age.

Now I would never do it. I went back into a shop yesterday as I thought they undercharged me £3. I once found a £20 note in the street and took it to the police station. What's my point? Not sure... that people make mistakes that don't have to define them?
