Teen sex - traumatised!

I came home today (not early) to find just 17 year old DS with a girl in his room, having clearly just had sex. She's a friend, he always denies she's a girlfriend. Using condoms (wrapper on the floor).

I know it's all normal, they haven't done anything wrong, being sensible etc, but I'm still finding it hard to get my head around it. He's my child!

Of course I didn't tell him off as such, although I suggested that he should maybe give a bit more thought to timing in future, as he knew his little brother and I would be coming home.

I can't look him in the eye, feel like he's a stranger. How long does it take to get used to this?!

Give it time. It sounds like you handled it well. He’ll be more embarrassed than you are etc.

Yes I think he's shocked that I haven't given him a big telling off, so hopefully that's earned me some parental brownie points that I can exchange for a bit of A level study this weekend!

i wonder when the change happens, i'm not a parent but when do parents go from hating the very thought of their kid having sex to secretly hoping for grandchildren

You missed the stage we are currently at - worried you'll get grandchildren unexpectedly and way too soon!

For me I'd like to have grandchildren when my kids are ready, when they want kids, and they're settled in happy stable relationships and financially able to support themselves and children.

17 perfectly legal and natural, the best way to deal with it is to start conversations about safe sex and consent and also respect for other people in the household.
