Accutane - acne treatment

DS 17 has acne and is very self conscious about it. He is currently on a prescription pill and Duac cream. Some times flare ups are worse than others. I have spoken to Gp again who will refer him to a dermatologist. He has friends who have taken accutane and it’s cleared the acne up and he’s keen to try it but I am very very worried if he was prescribed it that the Side effects are really worrying, Has any one got any feedback they can share on taking this medication ?

My 16 year old DD was on it for 6 months and finished it last April. I was very worried about the side effects but her consultant was very reassuring and said that the more serious side effects are quite rare. DD did get very dry lips but just made sure she carried lip balm everywhere. Her skin is perfect now.

My ds used it for about 9 months I think. Completely cured acne. Skin and lips got very dry so lots of moisturiser. Had video consults with dermatologist who wanted to speak to me about any changes to mh - thankfully all ok. He had to have some blood tests to check his liver was ok. He says bonus is his hair never gets greasy!

Very happy! Overall happy l satisfied with my results. My lips were really dry, but this was a low price to pay for no acne! I had cystic acne for over 20yrs and with just 5 months on this, I have none! Not even a pimple! It's so worth the dryness - https://euhealth24.com/drug/accutane

Hi OP, was your DS prescribed accutane and how did it go? My DS is due to go onto it and looking to see how others got on.

@Greyhair59 @Lisa5771 @Inastatus does it cure it, as in get rid of it for good? Or do they need to go back on it or stay on it long term?

Sorry, I only seen all the posts on the second page. Completely missed the first page..!

@stayorgo23 - it got rid of my DD’s acne completely. I believe a small percentage of people need a second course but for the majority it clears it after the first course.

Sorry, just seen this. DS never gets spots now, finished taking roaccutane about 3 years ago.

minipie · 10/04/2024 23:20

Sorry to jump in. Can I ask what dosage of roaccutane people have been on generally, if it has been successful? I have finally been prescribed it but only 10mg/day which seems very low.

Both of my daughters had pretty major hair thinning on it.
