Setting up automatic wifi disable overnight?

Anyone done this successfully? I’ve just had a frustrating session with BT but it seems impossible to do. Crazy!

My 16 year old is a bloody nightmare with devices and so I want to set up automatic wifi turn off overnight. So I don’t need to stay up and also have the battle every night with him. He CANNOT self regulate. We have tried.

Any techy help? BT is so shit at customer service. I have the app but it allows me to pause the wifi but not set up an automatic routine.

Thanks!

Worst case you have to reset the router back to its factory settings, then start again.

Teenager can do this too.

It's a bit of a sledgehammer approach but the most reliable method is to unplug the router and keep it by you.

Is it possible that the admin password has already been changed away from the default that’s written on the router? You may need to reset your router to factory settings.

Thanks all! God I hate technology

On the app go to More (bottom right), then Your WiFi network (2nd from top) then Control WiFi access from your devices (near bottom of screen), this then lists all the devices connected you can then pause for a certain time or diarise it to disconnect at a certain time.

I have a teenager who spends his whole time circumnavigating the system! & I spend my whole time disconnecting him it's like a Wi-fi dosey doh!!!

@TakeYourFinalPosition

Before you spend any more time on this - will they not just use data? Or someone else’s unsecured WiFi? There’s loads of it near me…

But yeah, the last time I did it, I just set time outs for specific devices like others said, it was in My BT.

We managed to do this DH did it somehow but DS just used his data instead after a while.

I have a WiFi blocker app on my phone that allows you to set a timetable for each device

elaeocarpus · 15/08/2021 20:15

I don't use the app for wifi i go to the home hub : 192.168.1.254

Go to advanced settings- you need the admin code, then you can set wifi times by device.
In combination i have set downtime on the iPhone via family/screen time controls and use family link on the Samsung device. So that data camt be used instead of wifi

doorornottodoor · 15/08/2021 21:05

@MadamNoo which app do you use please?

The issue I’m having with my BT app is that I think the admin password has been changed at some point so we can’t set up the advanced settings in the app.

I can’t face resetting it to factory settings as it will probably lead to more problems!

Yep this is exactly what my 16 yo does Angry

It’s just called ‘WiFi blocker’ with a red icon, second one that comes up if you search that on the app store

SE13Mummy · 16/08/2021 19:49

Another option would be to purchase a second router. Use one for offspring/guests and unplug each night/store in your room with a timer switch and keep the separate one for you to use. Make sure you change the password for the separate one so it isn't the default one.

LublinToDublin · 16/08/2021 19:59

I used to change the network name (and password). You need to set the password for the new network name on all the devices you want to use and tick connect automatically.
After that simply change the network name at 10 pm and your devices will automatically connect. DC's will not Wink

JenniferAllisonPhillipaSue · 16/08/2021 19:59

I think the admin password has been changed at some point so we can’t set up the advanced settings in the app.

Sounds as though your teenager is one step ahead of you, they've already changed the Admin password so they are in control. You'll have to go down the route of the factory reset.

FinallyHere · 16/08/2021 20:12

DC sounds perfectly capable of searching for network names and reconnecting his devices. You could hide the SSID, that might take a while for him to spot. It's a bit tedious to connect devices, so connect first then hide the SSID. Also allow connect explicitly only by MAC address, rather than any device.

Just coming back to this. We managed to get the app up and running - we got someone helpful in BT and reset unto factory settings. Then my husband promptly forgot the password again which did not go down well. 🤯

Anyway all sorted now and wifi being turned off at midnight.

Thanks for your help.
