Hello- DS 14 hates the sun and the hot weather

He would sit inside all day if I let him. He detests sun cream but would burn without it on days like today. He doesn't like wearing shirts either. How can I get him outside? Is this normal? I know the last couple of days have been particularly hot here but even so he'll sit in a stuffy bedroom rather than be in the shade outside.

I think the most important thing is a period not on the phone or xBox, whether outside (in shade) or inside.

I'm the same, don't mind sitting in the shade but don't like actively doing anything outdoors on hot days (anything above about 22°). I'll happily stay inside all day when its properly hot. Its just the way some people are.

Why does he need to go outside? He's uncomfortable

If it was chucking it down with rain you wouldn't expect him to go outside so why expect him to go outside when its hot? Tbh we've had so few hot days this year I hardly see how staying inside on the few hot days is a problem. It seems highly sensible to stay inside if your prone to burning!

How old is he? Does he do any sport? Pe? Lunch times outside? Walk to school and back?

It’s awful. Absolutely awful. Hate it with the passion of a 1000 suns.

I gladly stayed inside all summer as a child and continue to do so as an adult. I burn even with tons of sun cream.

Had to go out today and I’m honestly angry about it. I’m counting the days until winter.

If you are concerned about isolation, find him a nice indoor activity. Maybe he would enjoy rock climbing or a gaming club?

Vitamin D, that's the non negotiable thing in my house. They have to take it then I worry less about them being outside.
