Aibu to not let my daughter (13) play Red Dead Redemption? She seems very keen, but I think it's a little too gory... Do any of you have it at home? I'm pretty sure it's a 17 but she says it's the only thing she wants for her birthday.... Over to you and stay safe Smile

It's not particularly gory, there's some bad language. No sex. I actually really like the story, I cried buckets at the end.

TheChip · 06/02/2021 10:51

I loved that game. I cant remember much gore, so can't say for sure if there was much or not.
What I did remember about the game was my horses and how I spent hours catching different fish.

RaspberryCoulis · 06/02/2021 10:51

I agree. It's bank robbing cowboys set around 1900. No sex, a bit of swearing but nothing horrific. No themes of degrading women like there are in games like Grand Theft Auto.

It's a brilliant game - the graphics are stunning, it's a captivating story and I would definitely let my teenager play it.

It’s fine, as others have said, no misogynistic themes and the violence is no worse than a marvel movie. Pointlessly strict to stop her playing imo.

PlanDeRaccordement · 06/02/2021 10:58

Yes YABU. Just because she is a girl doesn’t mean she can’t play at being a cowboy. My DD has been playing Sea of Thieves which is where you crew a pirate ship.

RaspberryCoulis · 06/02/2021 11:01

In fact, one of the most kick-ass characters in the whole game, is a woman called Sadie. She's sort of a turn of the 19th century Jackie Weaver.

NotExactlyMrsCurrentAffairs · 06/02/2021 11:10

It's actually a really good game. I don't play myself but I do like to watch DH playing it. I wouldn't have a problem if my 13yo wanted to play.

It's her age and the fact the game is marked as being for older teens, not the fact she's a girl. Where the hell did that come from? Do you always push sexism into conversation for no reason?

I would say of all the mainstream games, Red Dead is the most 'PG 13'.

It's not overly gory, a little bad language in parts but it's a very beautiful and engaging story. I sobbed at the end.

I would let her play it.

Thank you all so much for the feedback! By your accounts, it sounds pretty good, we'll have a look at it today ;)

She is 13. Just say no

RaspberryCoulis · 06/02/2021 18:58

@Frozenintime

She is 13. Just say no
Or alternatively, listen to people who have played the game?
rainbowdaz · 06/02/2021 19:03

I watched my brother play when I was in primary school.

I don't remember anything bad or disturbing at all, you could skin animals you got but you obviously didn't see anything. It just goes into the inventory. It's really not that deep to just let her play, but it's your call.
