I currently have 3 sons in college (2 more still at home). Last year all three were attending a private University in our city but all were living on campus. We are all quite close and I had a great deal of contact with them all year. I would usually lay eyes on them 1x per week if only briefly.

One son has now transferred to a university 9 hours away. His dream school. I am thrilled for him and proud as can be but I am completely gutted. I cried the entire 9 hour car ride home. My husband said I dozed off and even cried in my sleep. I have ben crying pretty continually for the past two days. I can't keep food down. The only thing that I can seem to do consistently is sleep.

My son does not know about this completely unexpected meltdown (unless one of his brothers has told him).

Has anyone ever experienced this? right now I cannot even imagine things getting any better.

Yes I was weepy for days before DD went to university 4 hrs away. I was actually ok afterwards and the DH got upset!! It will pass after a week or so, try to stay busy.
