Son 13 won't wear face mask

Ds has no sensory issues but gets v upset at the thought of having to wear a face mask. Can anyone suggest one that he might be prepared to wear?

Where does he have to wear one and for how long? If we are just talking face covering then try one of those skiing bandana things that go round your neck or your head, and you can just pull up round your nose and mouth if needed

Would he be happier if he picked the colour etc? I’ve been making lots of masks for young people and they love the khaki and camouflage ones. I saw one teenager just wearing hers to be fashionable at the skate park!

Could you make one lined with soft jersey or brushed cotton to make it more comfortable?

Would a running buff be better that he could just pull up when he needs to?

You can get cycling ones that have valves in so he won’t feel like he can’t breathe.

I've seen a few teenagers locally using a bandana folded in half to make a triangle. Might be worth a try.

Unless he's going into a hospital, where he'll have to wear the one they supply, surely he doesn't need a mask, only a facecovering? Does he have some thing he already wears he could use? A buff or a scarf?

NCTDN · 11/07/2020 07:26

He's got a buff but doesn't want to ever put it on.

@ChessIsASport have you got a link to those cycling ones?
He's not happy going to shops in case they say a face covering is needed.

They’re mandatory on public transport & in shops in Scotland.
TheLegendOfZelda · 11/07/2020 07:31

Are you in Scotland?

Honestly, I'd just get a bandana type thing then leave him to it. If it's anywhere he has to wear one then his friends will be wearing one as well and it won't seem as bad. Once he is more used to the idea then he'll start thinking about the types he wants and you can buy more then

TheLegendOfZelda · 11/07/2020 07:33

Even Scotland is only face coverings not masks so a scarf type thing should be fine

poshredrose · 11/07/2020 07:40

Can you ask him to wear it around the house a bit to get used to it? Apparently you do get used to wearing one pretty quickly.

ChessIsASport · 11/07/2020 07:42

This is the sort of thing I mean but I have no idea if this particular one is any good.

Choice might help.

My 12 yo was very anxious about this, and perhaps does have sensory issues. I gave him a selection of home-made fabric masks, a disposable mask, and some nice Buff things to practice with at home. In the end he actually chose the disposable mask to wear at the barbers (to my surprise).

NCTDN · 11/07/2020 08:17

I'll look at that link thanks. I'm aware that if rulings change and face masks become compulsory in shops, he will have to get used to it so trying to get him wearing one now. Also at some point he'll need one for public transport.

Adidas do a pack of 3 black or blue masks which are reasonably comfortable and ds wears ok, they were £12.95, but increased to £14.95, but postage is free. You can use an online discount for 25% off taking them to £11, but then need to buy over £30 for free postage.

Black was in stock last night when I ordered more, but they go quickly.

NCTDN · 11/07/2020 17:02

Ooh Adidas might be a winner Wink
