My niece is a huge BE fan and I honestly can't see why. tastes differ, this is true but I'm not sure her message is worthy and good for the teens. She sings about depression and suicide, after all, and teenagers are way too vulnerable and sensitive to such things. What do you think of her? Do your children listen to her music??

OP posts:
Branleuse · 11/03/2020 08:36

yes my dd loves her and we are going to see her in July. I really like the music too, and I think BE is intelligent, creative, talented and different. Shes massively resisted the hyper-sexualised aspect to the music industry and I respect that a lot.
I dont think her music is particularly depressing, but then again at her age I was obsessed with the Smiths.

Goawayquickly · 11/03/2020 08:38

D loves her and I think she’s wildly talented.

^^ This

She seems to be her own person, which in this day and age, where most teenage girls seem to be clones of each other, is really important.

I really like her music too.

Shookethtothecore · 11/03/2020 08:41

I read a news article about her when she wn all the grammy’s that said similar about her message, but they changed their mind when they actually read the lyrics and how she encouraged help and growth. James cordon on Twitter re tweeted something she said before a concert the other week and it’s actually very positive

Sweetener12 · 11/03/2020 08:56

I love her as well as my DD does, we have seen her live show and it was amazing. I agree that some of her lyrics may sound controversial but in general she is great. My DD made a video with pictures and music about Billie for the school project and she wasn't the only one speaking about her.

ItsGoingTibiaK · 11/03/2020 08:59

Without fail, I get excited whenever I hear they’re about to play Billy Ei- on the radio as I think they’re going to play White Wedding or Rebel Yell. Then they finish the surname and I’m disappointed.

SouthernComforts · 11/03/2020 09:00

I'm not keen on her whispery singing so I've not actually listened to her lyrics. My dd feels the same (unusually!) so doesn't listen to her either.

Prepenultimate · 11/03/2020 09:01

She has a beautiful voice and Bad Guy was my favourite song of last year.
Huge respect to her for resisting the sexualised pop starlet route and showing others it's ok to not look a caricature of sexy all the time from the age of 14.

ThunderPython · 11/03/2020 09:01

I was fully prepared to be old and out of touch, owing to all the hype around her. Somehow I made it to last week before I knowingly heard one of her songs.

I said to DD (16) "play me her well known songs so I can see what all the fuss is about"

So she did and I realised I knew 2 songs from adverts and then she played one of her favourite songs, but not a chart hit, and I really liked it.

Very fresh, different to lots of music that's being churned out.

So I may be old, but I'm totally down wiv da kidz Wink

missyoumuch · 11/03/2020 09:04

I really like her and think she and her brother are extremely talented. And I very much wish that the pop star aesthetic when I was a teen had been more like Billie's style and not what I had which was Britney Spears/Christina Aguilera/etc.

Ginnyrellas · 11/03/2020 09:33

My DD loves her, Im warming to her music. But her as a person I think she's a very positive influence on our children. She's Kind polite and as PP have said, She's not sexualised herself at all and has got this far on her pure raw talent. I admire her. I wish there was more artists like her when I was growing up.

cdtaylornats · 11/03/2020 17:08

Grace Vanderwaal better

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 11/03/2020 17:11

I am late 30s and absolutely love her album, cracking tunes.

QuentinWinters · 11/03/2020 17:12

My DD loves her and so do I. "everything i wanted" is a beautiful song and really resonates with me about how I feel about dd

motherofawhirlwind · 11/03/2020 17:15

I introduced her to DD! I think she and Finneas are extremely talented and I love that she's her own person, not overly sexualised and close to her family.

Llareggub · 11/03/2020 17:17

She is universally adored in our house (44,13 and 11)

PanicAndRun · 11/03/2020 17:51

I like her . She seems real there are moments where she gets awkward, or weird , or confused, or emotional or mischievous. A little snigger that seems totally genuine. She has a disability and freely talks about it, as she does about issues with mental health, bullying and how surreal it still is for her.
I like quite a few of her songs and so does DD.

Bellyache and you should see me in a crown are my favourites.

AmICrazyorWhat2 · 11/03/2020 18:03

I find her mumbly vocals annoying but she's clearly talented and DD (14) loves her.

I prefer Lizzo, she's so bold and sassy.

NotGenerationAlpha · 11/03/2020 18:06

I’m in my mid 40s too and I really like her music too. I also think she’s a breath of fresh air with her non sexualised image. Showing young girls they can be successful and popular without showing their boobs, shaking their bottoms and skimpy outfits. Most music videos are just awful.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 11/03/2020 18:12

I hate the new Bond theme she's done! It's so like 'Writing on the Wall' that she might as well just have done a cover version. Otherwise, I'm just a bit meh, really...

Playdoughbum · 11/03/2020 18:14

Hugely talented and a great role model I think. I’d much rather teenagers were following her than someone destroying themselves with multiple cosmetic procedures and focused on consumerism (looking at you various Kardashians) She seems very “18” and I love her voice.

copperheart · 11/03/2020 20:28

I think she is hugely talented, original, great performer - I didn't like her bond number because it was too similar to all the rest of them.

Lilactimes · 15/03/2020 15:56

She’s brilliant - a real genuine star and talent and not so much about looks and image . What’s not to like? !

RB68 · 15/03/2020 16:00

52 this yr and a massive fan - think she is one switched on cookie

MrsCVorFluWhoKnows · 21/03/2020 14:09

I really like her and so does DS, also love her non-sexualized image and her let's just do what we want and have fun vibe on stage, she was fab at Glastonbury (old gimmer so watched on TV from the comfort of my sofa Grin)
