Cheap prom dresses

Where can I go to look for a cheap prom dress for year 11 dd? I’m thinking less than £100. Is that even possible?!

DD got a gorgeous sequinned prom dress for 12 quid from our local charity shop which was from an online brand I’d never heard of called Ever Pretty. Having checked them out online they’ve got some very cheap very pretty frocks on sale at the moment, and although I can’t vouch for the delivery service the product seems very good quality for the price.

@LegoLady95
DD is looking at Light in the box but I’m concerned about the quality of the fabric, fit and ease of return.
What was your experience?
Also, has anyone bought/been to Sonique in Birmingham? Thinking about a visit but it is quite a trek!

crazycrofter · 04/01/2020 17:15

Ever Pretty looks good! Was the quality ok? It’s only for one wear anyway 😂 Unfortunately I don’t have any dresses we could alter. Thanks for all the suggestions, dd is working through them all!

Very have some

LIZS · 04/01/2020 17:22

Dd had Quiz last year, reduced from Debenhams.

Pieceofpurplesky · 04/01/2020 17:38

TK Maxx or charity shops are a good place (go to somewhere posh with a charity shop - I bought a gorgeous (not prom) designer dress from the Wimbledon one years ago).

rainbowlou · 04/01/2020 17:47

My daughter got one from lipsy for £60

ScorpionQueen · 04/01/2020 17:53

Dd1 got one from Next and dd2 got a quiz dress from depop or whatever is called. The first was £100 and the second £50. Both were happy. I know people who spent a lot more, often because they didn't shop around.

LegoLady95 · 04/01/2020 20:45

@proggy I bought my wedding dress and bridesmaids dresses from Lightinthebox. I got married on a beach so pretty informal, but the quality was fabulous. I paid for the swatch booklet which had sample colours and fabrics, it was about £30 but well worth it once I had bought 8 dresses!

LegoLady95 · 04/01/2020 20:48

Also, I had to return one dress as I ordered ivory and the lace on the front was ivory but underneath was white and I didn't like it. It was no hassle to return and reorder the new one (in white), even though it was made to measure. Can't remember what I had to pay to return, but it wasn't unreasonable.

ProggyMat · 05/01/2020 09:57

@LegoLady95 Thank you, that’s very helpful.

One of our local charity shops does a prom dress section nearer the time. It might be worth asking your local ones if they have any in the back?

EmmaGrundyForPM · 05/01/2020 10:02

Ask on your local FB group if anyone is selling one. My friend paid a fortune for her dd's prom dress and then tried to sell it afterwards. She kept dropping the price but no one was buying - we're in a fairly affluent area and apparently no one wanted to wear a 2nd hand dress!

There must be lots of people with a only used once prom dress sitting in their house who would be happy to get rid of it for £50.

I have boys - on wore DH's DJ and the other wore a £80 suit from Tesco which he then wore several times afterwards to interviews etc. So much easier!

FairyBatman · 05/01/2020 10:51

@crazycrofter I will take a couple of photos when I am home later.

TacoLover · 05/01/2020 11:08

Chi Chi London has some lovely dresses.

crazycrofter · 06/01/2020 19:25

Thank you everyone! Dd has picked out a dress she likes on the Ever Pretty website. If you’ve bought from there, is it best to go one size up from your usual?

If she doesn’t like it we can always send it back and keep looking through these options!

Oh you sound charming @imintheghetto Hmm

Agree with selling sites - your local facebay or Gumtree, - there are lots of people trying to recoup some of the ridiculous money they spent on just one night.
Plenty in the charity shops around here too.

IlsSortLaPlupartAuNuitMostly · 06/01/2020 22:19

IME Everpretty sizing is roughly in line with normal sizing for the 17-25 market.

Muddledupme · 06/01/2020 22:27

I got one from eBay and it fitted beautifully but ignored the sizes and took really accurate measurements which was a totally different size to normal uk sizing. I also chose the lace up back for a perfect fit. It was just as good as the one I paid £450 for her sister the year before.

pointythings · 08/01/2020 19:19

I second charity shops - DD1 got her 6th form ball dress from a charity shop for £17 - stunning, well north of £100 new.

DD2 got her prom dress from a local shop (we are in a horseracing area) as she didn't want to go traditional long and princessy - I paid £28 in the sale for it.

crazycrofter · 09/01/2020 16:41

Well, we've ordered one (well 2 - same dress, different colours and sizes - hoping one will be ok) from Ever Pretty as they had 20% off ending today. So just £32. I could probably spend less looking round the charity shops but time is my problem as I work full-time and weekends are busy!

I'm not expecting this to be the end of it but at least we've started early! Thanks for all your help - we may well be looking elsewhere if these are no good!

Im following this thread as i need to find a dress for dd2. DD1 got a lovely dark green one from Quiz last year.
The every pretty site has some nice dresses, but it looks like they start at size 8 and I think dd2 needs a 6. Are they fairly accurately sized?
She is hoping for something in pale blue with a skirt that is full length and not tight, and ideally halter neck and not jewelled/sequined. Any ideas?

beenrumbled · 18/01/2020 10:10

I'm watching this with interest - DD has her prom this year, but is not into glitz and glam -she has suggested she might like to go full on 50's style, probably a swing dress, but I'm struggling to find something in her size - she is usually a 6!

It's either that or a jump suit style I think - any ideas?
