Bit worried about posting as when you do a search its all AIBU posts about trans issues; there's nothing on teen mental health either, but has anyone got specific experience of their teenager (DD16 in my case) having BDD - thinking she's too ugly to live etc? - she's under CAMHS but they are reluctant to refer to specialist services I presume because of cost. Seeing her psychiatrist again soon I am worried she's been struggling for 2+ years and hiding the way she really feels.

No ...but my daughter (13) feels much the same ... no amount of telling her how other people see her makes any impact. ..

Hi @LaBelleDameSansPatience thank you for replying. Does it affect your DD's day to day activities? Mine didn't leave the house for nearly a year missed all of year 11, we had to put paper over the mirrors as well.

My friend's ds has it - not diagnosed until his late teens/ early twenties, he also has OCD. CBT helps as does the medication.

Yes, I went through it twice, once at age 20, once a few years later. I was suicidal on both occasions, went through all the isolation, constant seeking of reassurance, blankets over mirrors, etc. Anti-depressants worked on both occasions, but took time. I had CBT as well the second time, which was brilliant - it worked ‘slowly’ if that makes sense, until I realised one day the anxiety over my ‘flaw’ was pretty much gone. There is light at the end of the tunnel, I promise. Feel free to PM me if you want more details. My parents were (and are) wonderful, and were a huge part of my recovery.

Thank you both, and thank you to Bobkitten for sharing and offering to PM; I'm so glad your parents helped.
