How long does your teen spend in the shower *light hearted*

This is a constant discussion in our house with two 13 year olds! One ds and one dd.

Dd spends a long time in the shower... she does have very long fine hair which tangles easily so struggles to wash it quickly. However she can be over 15-20 minutes.

Ds doesn’t spend as long but can be a good 10 mins.

Dh is losing patience and thinks it should be 10 mins max.

So how long does your teen take to shower and any tips to help them speed up???

@Zoflorabore thank you! It’s hard as I sometimes think I’m way too tough on him when he struggles with his mh (not in a nasty way just in a practical how can I help moving forward way) so I think that’s why I suppose I then make the excuses it may be due to that as I think I’m being too tough? Not sure if that makes sense but it does in my head!

I agree that I’d rather be dealing with her taking too long than not washing at all... dh has previously moaned the dc don’t wash often enough and that dd doesn’t wash her hair often enough? So they can’t win really. He was brought up in a very structured way that it was their way or it was wrong so I often have to point out people do things in different ways and doesn’t mean either are right or wrong. He was brilliant when the kids were little but I can def see more battles approaching now they’re hitting this age. He wants them to be independent but then struggles when they are!

I will point out about how much water it’s using though as that may help her. A timer wouldn’t help I don’t think as she would try to rush and just end up stressed/ coming out of the shower not finished 😂.

I’ve said as a compromise to dh I’ll go in the bathroom with her to check she’s not ‘wasting time’ and to see if there’s ways I can show her to be quicker (I suspect there isn’t and she’s just slow).

Oh and the daft thing is she actually hates showers anyway and would rather have a bath?! But she struggles to wash her hair in the bath Grin which is why she has to have a shower when washing her hair!

doxxed- Good idea re turning it off in between. I think dh also stresses cause our bathroom gets very steamy as the extractor fan doesn’t work, I’ll start opening the window a bit before she goes in too in preparation!!

It's definitely not wworth fighting over. He needs to pick his battles.
Saying that one of my ds used to go in a dream in the shower just mindlessly running water and forget to get out. When we turn our kitchen tap on the water in the shower runs cold...mission accomplished with no words spoken.
My dh has MH issues and also went to boarding school so no memory of being a teen in his parents house . No clue on some things to do with teens. We came to an agreement that l would handle those sorts of situations as l was a bit more teen friendly having good memories of what worked in my own home.

junebirthdaygirl I agree! Dh doesn’t really get that though and tends to try and fight every battle Hmm.
I’m happy to deal with stuff as I think I understand them better and don’t get as stressed but he struggles to back off and it still stresses him out.

It is hard as I can see that he struggles more when dealing with dd than ds... but if anything ds is more of a handful!

When I was at my mum's I'd regularly have half hour long showers, and my sister 17 who still lives there has 2 baths a day!
Now I'm 21 and have my own water/electric bills to pay I'm in and out in less than 5 minutes Grin

hillbilly · 18/03/2019 13:49

We only have one bathroom and I think it's wasteful of water and energy to spend too long in the shower so I think 10 mins is ample. I realise some may think I'm unreasonable 😏

No wonder the planet is fucked. Does she have any sense of the climate catastrophe facing us??
Though she would be perfectly right to place the blame squarely on our shoulders as the generation who have precipitated climate change most rapidly.
