Just have him brush his teeth often up until the appointment. Morning and evening and after every meal. Also floss and mouthwash.

My DD was similar between the ages of 8 and 14 and only got a grip on her teeth when she started wanting a boyfriend etc. Her teeth were terribly stained and decayed but after few fillings and regular care since they have bounced back and look in lovely conditon when she smiles. You can only see the staining if you look very closely. Her dentist has said that in his experience teenage teeth tend to scrub up quite well after a few weeks of good consistent care even after years of neglect.

Is there’s a reason that you feel he needs preparing? As long as he knows what happens and that he’ll be given an anaesthetic for procedures that may cause discomfort or pain, that I’ll be enough shouldn’t it or is he very anxious?
