Advice needed:Options for mobile phone usage on gap year - South Asia

Hi all DD going to Thailand, Bali, Laos and Vietnam for four months on gap year ... looking for advice on mobile phones - presume we need to arrange a local SIM etc - any ideas gratefully received !

Vodaphone world traveller for the start (£6 a day for the same data etc as your contract), and then local sim card - most places have a ready supply of PAYG sims - you need to find out if any are shared across the region. Make use of wifi + whatsapp, skype etc. for text/calls.
