13 year old with severe breast pain?

user1497545304 · 20/08/2017 18:58

My DD (almost 13) has been having extreme breast pain for the last couple of days in her left breast. So much so that if anything makes any contact with it, it causes pain. I wasn't so worried, until she showed me last night, and the left breast was swollen, red and noticeably bigger than the other one. She hasn't started her period yet, and although her boobs do fit an AA cup, she doesn't tend to wear a bra. Should I see a GP? Does anyone have any idea what it is, other than puberty?

I think a visit to the GP would be a good idea if its visibly red and swollen. It may not be anything but unexplained pain and swelling should be checked in my opinion.

MyCatIsABiggerBastardThanYours · 20/08/2017 19:03

That's something for the GP. I used to get terrible breast pain around my periods but in both, not just one.

Deemail · 20/08/2017 19:05

I would visit a Gp too but also wanted to say that during puberty and well before m y periods started I had awful breast pain. If something brushed against them I was in agony. I had small breasts then too. I still get tender breasts at time of month and during pregnancy but it didn't compare to the pain as a teen. It seemed to last year's if I recall correctly.

KentMum2008 · 20/08/2017 19:07

Does it feel hot? Hotter than the not-swollen one? Even if it doesn't, I'd say Gp is a must. Anything red and swollen is usually a sign of infection. Keep us posted OP.

Just asked DD and she says it is very hot. I think I will take her to the GP tomorrow. Could it be anything serious?

Ps, also sore around the armpit.

Poor girl, sounds so painful . The fact it's red,hot and sore would mean that I would try to get an appointment tonight at the pit of hours surgery.

AllGone · 20/08/2017 19:17

I had a blocked duct or something at a similar age. All sorted with a course of antibiotics. I'd go and see the GP.

Katescurios · 20/08/2017 19:18

Found this which looks like a good resource, infection is on the common list

MistyMinge · 20/08/2017 19:21

Poor thing, sounds like there's an infection there somewhere. Have you given any ibuprofen?

I wonder if it could be mastitis. Or is that only in lactating women?

WunWun · 20/08/2017 19:23

Yes, I'd try to get her seen tonight too.

Bumdishcloths · 20/08/2017 19:54

Sounds like mastitis- although obviously I'm not sure that's common amongst pre-pubescent girls... but needs to be checked out asap

user1497545304 · 20/08/2017 20:01

Thanks for all your replies. Rung up doctor's surgery, but could only fit me in early tomorrow. I'll keep you updated :)

Anyone can get mastitis. DD was 9 days old when I noticed a hot, red lump near her nipple. The midwife said it was normal but I decided to take her to the GP anyway. She sent me straight to A&E where DD was admitted and had an abcess drained Sad
I also had severe mastitis while breastfeeding her and as I couldn't get a GP appt for 5 days, mine turned into an abcess too which also had to be drained. Not fun, and extremely painful. Your poor DD.
Hope your DD is seen and treated in the morning.

MollyHuaCha · 20/08/2017 21:57

Poor girl. Hope she feels better soon. Flowers

KentMum2008 · 21/08/2017 19:12

How did your DD get on OP?

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 21/08/2017 19:13

Hope all was ok.

user1497545304 · 22/08/2017 08:59

Well, yesterday was a long day.
GP sent us straight to hospital, where DD had an abscess drained. I had no idea that someone her age could even get mastitis, and feel guilty that I did not take her to GP sooner. It may not have turned into an abscess then. Blush Sad

Anyway, enough feeling sorry for myself! I'm so glad she's been treated :)

Ouch, glad it's sorted now and recovers from it very quickly.

KentMum2008 · 22/08/2017 14:21

Oh your poor DD. When you said it felt hot that was my first thought. Glad she's sorted and hope she's better soon.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 22/08/2017 15:02

Ouch,poor thing!

terrylene · 22/08/2017 15:05

This happened to my mum at that age - it was an abcess and she didn't tell anyone until it burst everywhere Sad

It lived long in her memory.
