Is my 16yo going to grow taller?

He had a 10cm growth spurt at 14, grew another 5cm at 15, and has grown 1cm since then.

He's trying to be philosophical about it, but is disappointed because both dh and I had pretty much reached our adult heights at 16, and we're both tall.

Forgot to say, he's 5'8" and im 5'7".

(Yes, I know I mixmy units!)

I'd finished growing at 15, but dh didn't stop till he was 21.

I have an ex for who was 5'6" when he left school at 16 but grew to 6'3" by the time he was 20. It was funny when he bumped into old school friends! Lol

How tall is his dad?

I grew 2" between 16 and 18 and my eldest child grew probably 3" in the same age range. So he may get taller. Thinking about it, their cousin did the same thing and was about 5'8" to start with and is now 5'10". Must be a family thing.

My brother is over 6'. He was about 5'5 until he was 17!

boys tend to keep going and top out at about 20/21 ime

i also think height tends to follow the maternal line....so how doe that follow with your side of the family?

I am the shortest in my family ..apart from a dainty Aunt, brother, dad, mum all taller than me and I am 5ft7....dh is the tallest in his at 5ft10. Both boys are six foot plus....with a power struggle as to who is the tallest (maybe the youngest by a half inch!)

My brother, at 16, looked about 10 years old. He did some signicsnt growing between his 16th and 19th birthdays!

Is he overweight and how tall is his dad?

If he dad is taller he may have some growing still to do. If your DS is overweight that may be signalling to his body that it is time to stop growing and to finish puberty.

Dh and my little brother are 6'2" and 6'3" (I can never remember which is which). My mum's family are mostly short to average (I am taller than most) and my dad's family are average to tall. Dh is unusually tall in his family.

Ds is extremely lean.

Fingers crossed he has further to go then.

You can do tests to determine how much more he will grow.

If you and your dh are both unusually tall for your families, then it doesn't sound odd for him to not be so tall. If you still have his baby book, you can look and see what centile he was on for height before and follow that up to see what his adult height is likely to be based on that

I had to smile at this! I'm 5'2'', my mum is the same as was my grand mother whilst my grand father was 5'3''. My father is 5'4'' too and so was his dad (and mum).

My son is 14 and already 6'2''. His father is 6'3'' so definitely taken after him. I have expected his growth to slow down for the last 2 years now, but it hasn't so far. He will be what he will be, and whatever that is, he'll have to make the best of it and feel no shame or embarrassment, just like my family were brought up not to be ashamed of our short size.

My DS1 grew quite a bit when he was at university, we didn't keep track but I would guess a couple of inches. He's about 5'11'' now I think.

I had a 6" (15cm ) growth spurt between 13 & 14, then grew another 3" between 15 & 18 - ended up at 6'.

Also, like BadtotheBone I knew a lad who was really short for most of his teens and then shot up to well above average height.

Growth patterns are weird.

Also, re centiles: I have 2 DDs - one was under 10th all her childhood, & the other was above 75th. They ended up exactly the same height (different shape but both 5'7")

the orthotist my son sees says he reckons about 17 3/4 for boys...possibly later.

he says feet grow first, then body, then feet again.

my 17 year old is 6' 7"...we are REALLY hoping he has stopped growing!

Does he show signs of puberty, full shaving necessary, body hair from stem to stern?
Ds2 grew to 6'2" late. But at 15 he was scrawny, hairless and still awaiting all his teeth.
Dh grew 2" his first year at uni.

He's on track puberty-wise.

Ds likes things clearly defined. So, while he wants to be taller, ATM he would actually prefer to be told "This is it, you've reached your adult height." Then he'd accept being short and just get on with life. All of his friendship group either shot up in height or width this past year, and he's finding the uncertainty difficult.
