Advice on contraception for 16 yo girl

My little sister currently lives with us. And she has a boyfriend.

DSis and I both have a hereditary disorder (it concerns the blood clotting factor) so neither of us can use hormonal contraceptives.

When I was younger I simply used condoms and hoped for the best. I later got a copper coil, but I'm pretty sure I passed out from the pain during the fitting...

Are there other (reliable and less painful) options?
I wish there was a pill for men...

What's wrong with condoms? They're perfectly safe if used correctly and protect against disease too. Surely they're the best option for her?

I've known too many girls that got pregnant despite using a condom... no contraceptive is 100% secure and the condom definitely isn't.

Of course she should use one. But it just doesn't seem like it's enough

Could she use the progesterone only pill? Isn't it estrogen that can cause clotting problems?
Other than that a cap or diaphragm is an option but they sound quite faffy to use and the perfect use effectiveness isn't as high as condoms.

How can this be so? If you are only using jelly then of course helps prevent pregnancy. Ur not against disease. But condoms are around 98% then if they have accident there's jelly plus a trip to clinic to check neither of them have picked up anything.

Condoms are only thing prevent disease even if she could take pill she would be well advised to use them too.

We have looked into this. But it hasn't been researched enough to really know...

We were told that the morning after pill is mostly regarded as safe. But that taking any kind of hormone for a prolonged time is seen as risky.

I personally am currently pregnant and chose to take this risk. But I don't want my DSis to do something with a potentially fatal risk if it can be avoided.

Maybe simply non-latex condoms and a spermicide gel... And maybe a diaphragms as well..?

The best thing to do is make sure she always has access to condoms (meaning, accumulating them and making sure they're in all her bags and both her and her boyfriend have them at their homes).

Condoms are 98% effective if used correctly.

However, ask your GP. They'll have all the up to date information regarding non-hormonal contraception.

Is she aware of her cycle? Might be worth tracking it a bit so she can be aware of the more at risk times and be very vigilant with the condoms or use a diaphragm as well. Obviously she needs to use condoms all the time but a bit of awareness would be helpful.

The period tracker is a very good idea, I used to do that as well. A good friend got pregnant despite having a copper coil... (I've probably been slightly overzealous ever since)

Has she discussed it with a doctor, been to a clinic etc? Accidents can happen even with the pill and condom usage together. Cycle tracking is brilliant if you have a regular cycle but even then, things can go wonky. The best thing to do is to be clued up and about everything, every possible outcome and for her to know she has support if an unplanned pregnancy occurs, which it sounds like she does, you sound like a fab sister OP
