Getting teenage son to pull his trousers up

Hello there Mumsnetters,

I would appreciate some advice on convincing my son to pull his trousers up to a respectable level. I'm guessing you've seen these teenagers with their trousers down around their thighs, exposing, for whatever reason, their underwear for the world to see.
As annoying and personally offensive as it is, I'd never really tried to get my son to change this habit until a few months ago, when an air hostess asked him to pull his trousers up. I repeated the demand vociferously, but we both relented. Since then, his trousers have fallen even lower, almost to a point of ridicule (although the whole thing is ridiculous to me!), and I believe this to be a rebellion against our demands.

At this age, I see other young men of my son's age smartening up, as they enter the world of job interviews, finishing college and preparing for university and adult life. This saddens me that my son doesn't want to smarten up and would rather play the 'gangster'.
I have two key practical concerns with him wearing his trousers so low; being that when he sits down it's his underwear on the seat, which is terribly disgusting; and that when he walks tries to walk, he has to waddle with his legs far apart, that ridiculous 'penguin walk' that is all about the 'swag' according to them.

Wow, didn't expect to write an essay! But that's my position, and my reasons for wanting to secure a change of habit. Not about control or prudent parenting I don't think, just respect and avoiding offence and impracticality. AIBU??

He's a Teenager. It annoys you. Job done.

Take photos, lots of them. You never know when a bit of blackmail will come in useful.

Why is it disgusting if his underwear is on the seat? Surely they're clean? I don't see the issue- it's his style. We all wore clothes when young that our parents didn't like. As long as he is not actually showing his bum I really don't see what the issue is.
