My 15 year old has lied re where she stayed overnight. She will not tell us where she was and remains defiant. If I could see her phone messages I'd be more at ease. She won't tell me her password to unlock it. Can it be u locked?

Just make a deal you can get phone back when you can prove where you stayed. Tell her if it was a boy that you don't mind but you need to know. (even if you do mind).
This is what I tell my dd when she is out as long as I know where you are and who you are with and your not hanging about by the bridge and river where the teens are drinking.
But she has to come home at curfew time or she knows I would go and get her and I have done it. When she told me she was in a different place to her location. I went to the location her phone was shown on my app and she was their but lied so I took her home in front of her friends so she won't do that again.

When trust has gone how does invasion of privacy help?

No password, no phone, that is the deal in this house.

Do not give her her phone back. I would be more angry knowing she lied than about where she actually was.
