How has your 16 yr old been spending their 10 week summer holiday?

Just wondering how other people's 16 year olds have been spending the extended break after GCSEs?

DS had a week away with friends abroad (!) and is now doing NCS. He's had to do some pre work for his A level choices too. And a fair bit of sleeping!

My dd did a week a rod with friends too!
Seemed to work out really well thank goodness. What is NCS?

NCS is National Citizenship Service. It's a 4 week commitment. They do a week outward bounds team building, another week in Uni halls of residence learning skills like planning, budgeting and presenting then they spend the next two weeks planning and delivering a project locally. They have to bid for the money Dragon's Den style! I think DS's group are planting a garden locally.

I would have liked DD to do NCS, except that the school told us about it in about May or June, long after we had made plans for summer.

I had never heard of it before so I couldn't plan around it.

We have been to Florida and away to visit family and for a weekend break in London. Other than that DD has slept a lot and has hardly moved off the settee.

We have had a week family break, and dd had another week with friends and a long weekend at a festival.

Other than that she has spent a vast amount of time lounging about and complaining of feeling tired, so much so I'm wondering if it's a medical problem. She's had about 7 weeks off school now so I don't understand why so tired (and quite grumpy a lot of the time with it). Not staying up late at night.

Lounging days have been Interspersed with meeting up with friends for BBQs, films and hangouts and doing some summer holiday homework for next year.

NCS sounds very positive and constructive but didn't appeal to my dd (probs because sounded too constructive lol)

A month of hanging out with friends in town, going off on minor outings. A month+ staying with relatives. One week will be home waiting for results/sorting out any difficulties/helping with DIY.

Could your dd's tiredness be to do with feeling at a loose end? Happens easily at this stage, might help her to learn that she is happier when more active.

Made mine get a summer job. He hates it but it's done him good confidence-wise -and stopped him lazing around in bed until after lunch every day

DS2 did NCS (lifesaver - DS1 did it as well and it's wonderful for keeping them occupied!) and now he's alternating do volunteering as a follow on from that with lounging in the front room playing games and winding his siblings up... He's currently on the other sofa in his pjs playing Guitar Hero and killing Modest Mouse. We do day trips when I'm not at work, but tbh we've kind of given up this summer - lots of laziness in this house and far to much game playing and youtube watching.

My ds has completed his silver DofE, one weeks work experience (I sorted this as his school does not do it), NCS and has secured a part time job that he starts next week. He has also spent time chilling and gaming with friends.

A week's work experience, then went to Israel for a month with his year group hiking, rafting, sleeping in the desert and bonding with friends. Came back with his first girlfriend.

Slept, played X box, been on a 2 week family holiday and now he's got a job working in a pub.

By the way my son is very social but is an 'indoor' person. His words, lol

My son said 'I need to doss mum, theses GCSE's were tough'. So for 3 weeks I didn't nag.

I did warn him it's only for 3 week.

Only 1.5 hrs on play station each day - regardless, them are the rules in our house from day dot of getting that horrible machine.

Now there was two choices, get yourself out and about or have hard labour doing chores in the house.

Yep, he chose the chores.

My gardens are done
Fence panels all painted
Cleaning windows
Bagging up charity stuff
Cleaning throughout house

A week away with the famalam.

Job done! Was paid a bit too, going rate! Everyone's a winner

Just short of Feck all.

I have two 16 year olds ( though they are year 12).

They have been on holiday with us.
Been to a music festival.
Visited their grandma for five days.
Attended a surfing course.
Socialised with mates ( parties, cinema, lunch out etc).
Slept .
Watched the Olympics.

We still have over two weeks left. We're going to go away again, buy new clothes for September. DC need to do all the outstanding school work, draft their personal statements etc.

That sounds busier than it has been in reality.

Lots of loafing has been done. In fact DS said last night thatcher needs to 'do something' this week. Dunno what he has on mind.

I feel jealous of those parents whose kids did NCS and work. Mine was had 2 holidays and spent a lot of time reading, lying in bed, sleeping, seeing friends. She goes to Reading fstival next week which has prodiced a flurry of activity (!!) Her work experience fell through. She has come for some walks with me and been to the supermarket. I have told her this is the last time she gets to do nothing! It really was getting on my nerves. She says 'you dont know how hard I worked for my GCSE's!!' Hmm.

Mine has been away with us for a couple of weeks, been doing some voluntary work and is now doing a mix of dossing about, helping me a bit and studying. Next summer she needs to get some paid work, but this summer I think it's nice that she's had time to chill. It's a rare thing in life to be able to do that and should be treasured.

Mine partied with friends then went to South America for 4 weeks on an organised trip, is back home for results then we will be off on a 2-week family holiday to Asia

Sleeping a lot !

Dd went back to school after her national 5s and then had 6 weeks off. We were away a week and she's worked at the hotel where she is waiting staff 3/4 days or evenings a week and chilled with friends the rest of the time.

Third time round chezApocalypse, lazy big siblings rejected it. Three weeks family holiday, in 2 tranches, week long course with granny and Reading festival.

My son went away with me and his brother for 10 days to Spain. He got himself a job working in the kitchen of a local pub ( the wages are appalling) and he's dossed in his room, gone out with friends and for the last week he's off to Greece with his dad and brother.

Waiting for results day with trepidation.

Ds1 did ncs, came on holiday with us and dissed for a few days. We then left him home for four days while we took our other two to an activity camp.
He then went to look after his grandmother with dh as she had a fall and is now chilling while he waits for results day.
Once that's over with its a case of preparing for school.

I've had the part time job conversation but in reality I want him to enjoy his last summer with no responsibilities.

15 ( 16 in July) Daughter spent almost entire time with BF, either in person or "virtually" on FB, FaceTime whatever, whilst we were abroad on holiday. Drove me mad but got fed up with nagging at her so let her do it.

Mine has done sod all. It's been a fight to get him to do his regular chores !! I can't wait til they are all back at school next week !,
