DD wants to change her name -again!

Dd was given a short version of a classic name

Eg Eliza instead of Elizabeth

When she was 12 she said it was too toddler like and asked everyone to call her 'Liz'
Took a bit of getting used to but now it rolls off the tongue

She has now decided, at nearly 15, that it doesn't suit her and wants to change it to a different shortened version of the original name -Betsy

The new name has no relation to her actual given name and I just cannot see it as her -it feels weird to say and she has to remind me every time

I don't want to use her given name if she doesn't want me to as I know plenty of people that use short names and feel like they are being told off if their proper name is used

But this name feels so detached

*Eliza/Elizabeth not the actual names but the principle is the same

So, is she just asking to be called the name or has she actually officially changed it or wants to?

If it's the former then let her crack on and try to remember - sounds like before long she will want to change it again anyway.

So if I am getting it right, You named her something like Megan (from Margaret) she then wanted to use Meg and you've gone along with it, but now she wants to use Greta which relates to Margaret but not to Megan which is her given name?

Same question as Magnum? Are we talking actual official name changes or "this is what I would now like to be called"? And if it is "this is what I would like to be called" how forgiving is she if absentminded old mum accidentally slips into the old name?

Have very similar situation with dd, except that we always did use two versions as we are bilingual. And now third version has been added which we never had anything to do with.

We get round it in a spirit of mutual tolerance: I accept that she now thinks of herself as newname, she accepts that mum has a mind like a sieve.

DS 9 has insisted for the last month that we call him Jeff his name is Harry! No idea where Jeff came from but he gets bloody annoyed if you forget.

Not an official name change but changed on the register at school so reports etc are in her preferred name rather than her actual name

She wants to officially change it before gcses though as she doesn't want her given name on her exam certificates

Magnum -you've got the principle of the different names yes and she's not very tolerant of me getting it wrong

She also wants to change her surname from her dad's to mine which I don't have a problem with but want her to wait a bit longer to make sure

Wouldn't certificates be official name anyway, not "known by" name. Presumably the exam entries were done long ago!

I agree exam certificates should be same as birth certificate and passport.

Personally I would say she is stuck with this one until college with regards to registers and school although friends and family could use the new one, loads of teenagers are given nicknames by their friends.
