DS career hopes ruined - what now?! Desperate!

Posted about this a while back in a different topic - my DS always wanted to join the Marines. I told him to wait until he is 18, currently at college but hating it! He has now developed a nut allergy which is a complete bar, but he doesn't know this yet Sad

I have no idea what he will do now - he is not one for an office job but goodness only know what comparable careers are open to him now Sad

No advice, but just wanted to say that there was a very similar thread a few months back so it's worth doing an advanced search for "army", "marine", "medical" etc - people were chipping in with lots of relevant military and quasi-military options.

Merchant navy? My DS is looking at that and I do not remember seeing nut allergy as an issue on the medical. They do cadet programmes for deck and engineering.

Thatsn0tmyname I don't know about treatment with sensitising - l have heard of something like this but think it's in very early stages and don't know if it will help him in the time frame he will need but will look into it a bit more - thank you.

EssentialHummus - thank you, l will try that.

PirateSmile - unfortunately police force doesn't appeal to him, neither does Paramedic. He toyed with the Fire Service for a while but there are so many cuts and minimal vacancies he dismissed that and a year of Fire Cadets put him off totally Hmm

CalicoBlue - don't know much about the Merchant Navy but will look into it - thank you.

My heart 'breaks' for him as l know how much it means to him and he will blame me for 'following' up on the reactions and getting him tested etc. I am dreading the fall out from this.

He would need to apply to one of the shipping companies, they would sponsor him whilst he studied and pay him too. He would come out with a degree and a job. No fees or debts at the end.

They do one term at sea and then one at college, on a rotation.

A friends ds has just been accepted as a Trinity House cadet, and has been looking round at the merchant navy colleges which look amazing.
