Daughter 152cm at 12

I'm putting this on the teenager board as I want to ask the mums of girls who are a bit older. I have done the average of my height & her fathers height less 7cm because she's a girl and that comes out at about 164. Could she really grow 12cm in only a year (I think girls stop growing after 13). That hardly sounds possible. She got her period a couple of months before she turned 12).

By the way, I'm not putting pressure on her to be taller than I am! I think she will be surprised if she's not.

Everything I can see on line says the big growth spurt is between 11 & 12. And yes she has grown a lot in the last year.

Girls stop growing 2 years after their 1st period. Know quite a bit about growth as 1st daughter has cerebral palsy and 1 leg longer than other would have been lot longer without intervention. 2nd daughter was shooting up between 12 and 13 convinced she was going to be taller than me. 1st period aged 11 I was quietly confident! She's now 15 and same height she was at 13. I'm 5' 7" dad is 6'2" she is 5'6". I win, just!

My dd is 14 and a half and has just been fitted with jaw altering braces. The ortho checked very carefully on her x-rays to check that she had enough growth left to be worth it (otherwise she would have to have her jaw broken and reset when she is properly adult). He said she probably had a final inch to go.

Her predicted adult height has always been 6'1" given or take 3 inches, and she is currently about 5'11". Period started about a year ago. Certainly her growth has seriously slowed down in the last year.

Better height predictors use the child's current measurement as well as the parents heights.

Stinkersmum · 02/06/2015 05:54

Those calculations are bollocks. According to them I should be 168cm. I'm actually 188cm.

antimatter · 02/06/2015 06:14

I believe current theory is that the child takes their height after either of parents and not the mixture of both.
Nothing wrong with being 152 cm as a grown up!

stillenacht1 · 02/06/2015 06:18

Started periods at 10
At 11 I was 163cm
At almost 42 I am 163cmSmile

nooka · 02/06/2015 06:49

Oh and both dh and I are taller than both our parents :)

Stinkersmum · 02/06/2015 07:01

My db and I are both taller than both our parents.

bigTillyMint · 02/06/2015 07:07

I was 5'7" at 11 and 5'8" at 12. I started my periods at just turned 12. I didn't grow any more - I am still 5'8"!

DD was 5' at 11 and 5'2" at 13. She started her periods at 12 - not sure if she grew any more after that - she is still 5'2". She is nearly 16. Both her grandmothers are 4'10" and 5' so I guess she takes after them.

DisgraceToTheYChromosome · 02/06/2015 21:40

DD started 3d periods in Y6, and was then 5'1-2". Archfarchnad: her jaw surgery was carried out at 18y 10 mo., at which point she was 5'10". I'm 6'1", DW 5'10", but the real clue to her height is probably my DM. She achieved 5'9" on a pre-war working class diet followed by rationing. She was one of the tallest women ever at her teaching college in 1949.

Takver · 02/06/2015 22:06

I've always read that typically girls will grow around 2 inches more after they start their periods - bbc link for example. All these things are averages, though!

Takver · 02/06/2015 22:09

Nine inches more is pretty impressive, though, DisgraceToTheYChromosome :)

DD is 13 and a bit over 5 foot, started her periods 18m ago. I doubt she'll get much over 5' 2", no matter how much DH says his sister is tall; all the women in my family are around the 5 foot mark or a little more Grin

AtiaoftheJulii · 03/06/2015 18:09

My girls are all tall, and always have been. The eldest two have, I think, stopped growing now at 18 and nearly 17, but although they both had massive growth spurts around 11, they both carried on creeping up for a long time, certainly more than two years after their first periods - that would have meant dd2 stopped growing at 13, and she didn't overtake dd1 until she was at least 15!

MedusaIsHavingaBadHairday · 03/06/2015 19:45

I have one girl of 5 ft 10 and one at 5 ft 3....! (Same parents 5 ft 7 and 5 ft 9)

DD1 was always tallish but not exceptional, and stopped growing at 16 at 5 ft 8. Then started growing again at 18 and grew another two inches!

DD2 stopped growing at 13 and hasn't budged since :D She's now 21 and I think 5 ft 3 for good, which she feels is unfair !

AlexandraLeigh · 03/06/2015 21:30

My DD got her first period at 14 and then had a growth spurt, she's still not very tall about 160(something)cm, I wouldn't worry about height

shushpenfold · 05/06/2015 06:01

If the 'grown 2 inches after your periods start' is correct I would be 5'2"........I'm 5'10" (a generous one.....nearer the 5'11"in the morning!)

andadietcoke · 05/06/2015 06:08

I had a big growth spurt at 9/10, started my period at 10 and was the same height now as I was then (5ft7). I was taller than some of the sixth formers and like magenta was very good at netball for a while.

I'm taller than both my parents and am basically with my DH because he was the only boy taller than me by 3rd year.

JustDanceAddict · 05/06/2015 16:21

If she's started her periods it's unlikely she'll grow more than another inch or so. My DD is already taller than me at nearly 13 and hasn't started yet. She has grown loads this year -about 4 inches at least.

AtiaoftheJulii · 05/06/2015 16:27

insanityscatching · 05/06/2015 16:44

Dd1 was quite tall in relation to her peers throughout primary. Not overly tall but as tall as the tallest group of girls in her year. At 11 she was 156 cm and started her period. She didn't grow anymore and most of her friends overtook her.

Dd2 has always been the smallest girl in her year she started her period at 12 and slowly but surely she is growing she is still only 146cm at 12 but she is catching up with the shorter girls. Her hands and feet are bigger than dd1's so who knows she may even grow to be taller than dd1 which will annoy dd1 immensely Grin

lipsynch · 05/06/2015 16:58

You just can't tell
I was 5ft 7 at 9 years of age . My mother thought that I would be a 6 ft adult.
However, I am still 5ft 8
My younger sister was 5ft at 13 years of age and was 5ft 10 inches by the time she was fifteen.'
We are both taller than our parents.

lipsynch · 05/06/2015 17:00

Sorry , I meant to say that I am 5ft 8 now

Pippidoeswhatshewants · 05/06/2015 17:08

My dn went for a check-up at the age of 2 recently. Apparently you will end up being about 1 metre taller than you were on your second birthday?

Pippidoeswhatshewants · 05/06/2015 17:10

Sorry, apparently you have reached half your height at 2!
and you lose half your memory at 40

WankerDeAsalWipe · 05/06/2015 17:17

Sorry, apparently you have reached half your height at 2!

Yeah, I've heard that too. DS2 was 87cms at age 2 - he is currently 13 and 185cms and definitely still growing...

DS1 was 95cms at 2, currently 14 and 190cms and still growing but he is closer to that theory.

insanityscatching · 05/06/2015 18:40

The half your height at two isn't always accurate either. Ds was ridiculously tall at two something his paed always commented on as he was on course to be 6 foot 5 and I am only just 5 foot. At twenty he is 5 foot 8 which is what I'd expect considering neither dh nor I are tall.
